This would happen to me sometimes with home grown tomatos. Maybe it in part has to do with store bought are usually picked under ripe so they survive getting to the shelves? Or could be whatever mystery variety I was planting

My best friend and I travel really well together. We have a vague idea of the kinds of things we want to do and we figure it out while there. One time we were in a country with few English speakers, our housing cancelled on us, we were like fuck it let’s still take the train to the next city we’ll figure out housing on the way. The shit we get up to, problems we solve on our feet, these things help show how a place can actually be not how some tour agency pretends it is. I much prefer that

Videos@lemmy.world•Studies show Dutch children are more independent and less likely to be obese than other children. This is one of the reasons whyEnglish
0·4 days agoI don’t think that’s the gotcha you think it is? What do you call a 6+ hour walk, a casual stroll? You have to bring water and food when you’re out for that long doesn’t matter where you go which is why I called it a hike. I can walk for 6+ hours in Seattle and be in walkable neighborhoods the entire time with proper sidewalks, shops, parks, and near transit to head back if I don’t feel like continuing to walk
The least walkable topography is near downtown where you have the one line, streetcars, and busses. There are several transit options to get in, out, and around the downtown hills; hell the monorail is still running if you are feeling fancy. Outside of downtown you have the one line that’s being expanded every day with busses leading out from it’s stops. I won’t say Seattle has it perfect or is the best but it is undeniably one of the better US cities for walking and they’re actively working to improve it in several ways

0·4 days agoMost of Seattle is readily walkable, I’d often go on basically hikes through the city taking 6+ hours. There’s definitely a few places that are difficult to get from one area to the next but individual neighborhoods and most the connecting areas are solid for pedestrians and bikes. Denver though holy fuck I’ve never been somewhere less walkable it’s a disaster there

16·6 days agoOh good. I’ve been working on a setting for some-odd 16 years now. One of the earliest concepts in it is how the galaxy is run by an AI that subtly alters interstellar communications to influence things at scale without being discovered. Love that one of my existential fears of the future gets a shot at playing out irl

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why are public school teachers so underpaid in the US?English
0·7 days agoThere’s also the feedback loop where they point at the broken underfunded public services and are like “see how shit public services are? They’re a waste of taxes. We could gut them to save you money”
As someone who would routinely go around Seattle naked on my bike this is 100% true. Something about shoes and a helmet feels way more naked than actually naked
Reverse image search I found somewhere saying they’re Grenadine apples. But there are several types that are pink in the middle. My personal favorite apple ever are Lucy Glo which are also pink 🩷
Legitimately this could work during a restaurant interview. Self aware, humor, less likely to throw a pan across the kitchen. They’ve experienced a surprise 12 top an hour before close and know how to get through it
Gets even more fun when you move to another country and are coordinating calls back home and realize different countries have different days they switch the clocks

And at least to some degree scamming people even if that’s not the main focus. I know a few people that got full on scammed by it

News@lemmy.world•Trade court orders tariff refunds in setback for TrumpEnglish
11·15 days agoIs this even a setback, am I missing something? Tarrifs -> companies raise prices -> tarrif refund -> companies keep prices. Citizens pay once to the tarrif, once in taxpayer money going to refunds, and forever more to raised prices. Companies get all that money instead which is exactly what trump and friends want. I haven’t been following too closely so someone let me know if my understanding is wrong?
One of the times I was at my GP I mentioned my feet have been hurting. They made a really obvious show of looking at the 4in heels I was wearing, slowly looked back to me, “do you wears those often?” I didn’t even respond I felt too dumb x.x
While growing up my family once a year would take a 20 hour car trip to visit extended family for a couple weeks then 20 hours back. Parents would do five hour shifts and get the whole thing done in one go. Shift changes meant refuel, bathroom, that’s it. Other than that there was no stopping unless it was a “the next bump in the road I will 100% shit myself” kind of an emergency
Now personally I’d argue maybe we shouldn’t have been taking road trips in that manner because it’s like putting your body through a meat grinder. But if trips like that are someone’s goal I doubt there are many charging stations in the middle of absolutely nowhere that can fully charge an EV in the time it takes to pee. I’m hoping though maybe a shift to EVs will change the way people approach long road trips to actually force them to take breaks
