  • I think the premise falls flat when you realize the “Death note” is real apart from the magical book.

People kill other people all the time by writing things down. Tyrants, people working for health insurance companies, etc.

Giving an intelligent, reasonable person with good intentions that power is an improvement on reality.

  • Reddit only exists as Reddit.com

The people that made Lemmy post the code to make a lemmy server online and give it away for free. A bunch of people set up their own “lemmy” servers (called an “instance”) and gave them different names. I’m on midwest.social, and you’re on thelemmy.club Each instance generally has its own theme, and the communities (subreddits) on that instance reflect that

The cool thing is all those different servers talk to each other with the ActivityPub protocol. I can browse and post in communities hosted on thelemmy.club and you can do the same on midwest.social. In fact you posted this AMA on a 3rd server (lemmy.ca) in their “Ask Me Anything” community.

Any social media site that uses ActivityPub can talk to a site that also uses it. Some sites are more Reddit like, some are like Twitter, etc.

One thing to know is lemmy doesn’t have an “algorithm” like Reddit – it’s not going to feed you content it thinks you’ll like. You have to seek out communities and subscribe to them. I suggest clicking Communities at the top of the page, then clicking All so you can see all the communities on all the different instances (servers) running lemmy or something compatible.

E.g. I’m subscribed to some communities on my instance @midwest.social, but there’s a bunch of bigger communities on other instances I’m subscribed to as well.

  • Yes, but realistically only for much older hardware. Usually such “counterfeit” systems are based around an FPGA, e.g. MiSTer. The advantage is the hardware itself doesn’t violate IP laws since it’s a generic FPGA, while the legally questionable “programing” to make it copy a console’s architecture (e.g. an N64) can distributed through decentralized channels on the internet.

Sometimes you’ll get a reverse engineered System on a Chip like the C64 Direct to TV, but only where there’s little to no risk of getting sued.

With modern hardware your end product will almost certainly be more expensive than the real deal (if you’re able to pull it off in the first place). The company whose hardware you’re copying is also far more motivated to find and destroy you. Hacking the real hardware to run pirated games makes much more sense.

  • Multiple reasons – not justifications, but reasons.

A municipality/county can’t or won’t fund EMS in its entirety: either there’s not a large enough tax base or voters don’t want to pay the taxes needed. A functional EMS system isn’t cheap to operate (even with volunteers) and it’s not uncommon to contract it out to private EMS companies in areas that can’t afford full time EMS.

Arguably it’s also to prevent abuse. You’ll get a minority of “super users” that don’t actually need an ambulance and call for some of the most asinine reasons. They’ll lie and say they have chest pain when all they really want is a free taxi ride across town. Or hypochondriacs, people with a mild cold, etc. Some of these people will call multiple times a day, every day.

In the USA we really can’t refuse transport even if we know it’s abuse, and proving abuse is damn near impossible. The problem is a lot of the aforementioned either can’t/won’t pay regardless, or are on public aid and won’t receive the bill. The fucked up part is the costs incurred by those people are carried by those that will pay.

For moving more wealth to the top

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dot-com_bubble

Some companies did survive the dot-com bubble popping and went on to become dominant in what was left of the market.

We’re looking at a desperate struggle of AI companies convinced they’re going to be the ones that make it, being encouraged by other companies milking them for everything they can before the crash.

A company that sells RAM, GPUs, etc will of course sell every last unit they can to AI companies – they want to move as much product as possible (at inflated prices) before reality kicks in and demand drops. And they’ll have a hungry consumer market to fall back to after making a shit-load of money off of the AI rubes.

The people building data centers are rushing to get them built for the same reason. They don’t give a shit about anything that happens after they’ve been paid.

  • Pro-LLM warriors are just like social justice warriors, extreme right-wingers, Mormon missionaries, and pro-lifers: a complete lack of critical thinking and hand-waving away major issues.

I was pro AI early on, but things have changed. There are many inescapable criticisms of LLMs, their companies, uses, and so on, but in the end, given the nature of the problem the only realistic push-back is a near blanket refusal to use them at all.

Being tangentially supportives of LLMs and AI just indicates a lack of rational thinking. Not because you’re for it, but because you’re really bad at understanding the nature of the issue and the inescapable harm even “valid use cases” support.

  • I worded it badly and did edit my comment.

I’m not trying to demean anyone: I don’t think there is anything negative about being trans or transitioning. They know that about me and give me shit about it constantly. The things they say about trans people is horrifying.

So when I gently and supportively ask how theirs is going they really don’t like it – but fuck them, the hypocrites.

  • I work with a lot of guys into (or adjacent to) the “I’m deeply insecure about myself” part of the manosphere. Testosterone supplements, sildenafil, meat heavy diets, etc.

I usually ignore it, but sometimes they start pushing that stuff or talking down to me about it. The easiest way to shut it down is playing off their insecurities.

“I’m already a man, I don’t need gender affirming care.” Followed by asking them how their transition into a man is going.

“Why? Mine [dick] works fine, but I’m glad you found something that helps.”

    “I don’t do fad diets.”
