UPDATE: I really want to make a proposal for our local parks - am I being unrealistic?

Hey No Lawns community!

A couple weeks ago I posted my proposal for urban community gardens here

You guys gave me some really good feedback. Some key points were around clarity, making the website more approachable from the get-go, separating it into sections.

I’ve been working on the site to take this feedback on board - I think it’s much clearer now, but would love to hear your feedback on these changes!

Here’s the website

Some of you also made great points about getting a specific site to start working with. I’m looking into this now and will be adding another section about potential projects soon.

Really excited to get this in the ground!!!

And the original post from the above link:

I really want to make a proposal for our local parks - am I being unrealistic?

It drives me crazy that all of the street “parks” in my city are basically just grass and trees. It feels like such a massive waste of space and lawn mowing tax dollars.

So, I wrote a proposal for how we could use this public park land instead, as urban farming/ gardening/ community spaces.

I made it into a website to hopefully share around with my local community, get some traction, and eventually push it to our local council:

https://www.ourbackyards.org/

I’ve been writing it for so long that I worry I’m too much in my head about it.

Those of you that have done urban gardening projects like this, do you think this is unrealistic? Do I need to add more info, cut back, or elaborate on something else? Is there anything I’m missing?

Really appreciate any feedback/discussion !!

“Sure thing. As long as it keeps the poors quiet and satisfied and it doesn’t cost us money.”

You have to remember what urban parks were created for…

While many park promoters were concerned with beautification, others wanted to use parks as tools of social reform. These horticultural reformers felt strongly that cities needed space for more vigorous recreation, a place for the landless worker to dissipate dangerous energy that, unchecked, might be channelled into Bolshevism, unionism or intemperance.

Edit: looking back at this comment, it was a bit more cynical than this post deserves. I think this is a great initiative, and I’m 100% behind natural spaces instead of fake lawns. I think they’ll hit roadblocks when people with power feel threatened (like “not in my backyard”, “this is going to attract the criminals”, “I don’t want my taxes paying for this”, etc.)
