I really don’t get how this happens in both juvie and adult prisons. Just open the door? I get that there is some transfer of custody maybe but keeping them in prison is unacceptable. The failsafe should not be “keep them in jail”, it should be “let them out”. Maybe this will help the jail system clean up their act. Judges usually get very ornery when their orders are not followed. Why not in this case? Why don’t they start holding officials in contempt?

in juvenile prisons it can happen when the children are in custody of the state and the state has no one to release them to. I’ve been the person they’ve released the kid to a few times when they had no one else. knew the kid, knew they were in for bullshit reasons, and they lived with me for a while until their parent figured their shit out. all supervised by the courts, but it happens that people fall through the cracks if you aren’t watching
