No shock there Fedora is downstream from Red Hat which is owned by IBM.
Isn’t Red Hat downstream from Fedora? But I guess it doesn’t lessen IBM’s influence.
Na, Fedora is downstream
yeah, i’m not surprised either, although its kind of sad since i really liked bazzite
Me too. Bazzite has been amazing for me and its sad to hear this. I’ve heard cachyOS is also really good so I’ll probably give that a go
Off-topic, but isn’t Fedora technically upstream from RHEL?
it used to be; but ibm made them change things around to maximize profit potential like they did with ansible.
open source is enshitifying and the labor aristocracy that creates it is mostly aligned with the oligarchy’s efforts to squeeze profit out of it.
Na, Fedora is downstream
Yeah, nah. That’s not how the term up/downstream is used in the context of product streams.
shame :( I like Fedora…(It’s what I use) these surveillance laws are helping me pick my OS, so that’s the bright side
I also use Fedora and have been happy with it but this is making me reconsider. I hope they change their mind, or that it somehow doesn’t get implemented for whatever reason.
Did you have no better source for this than a far-right “anti-woke” shitstain?

here we go…
so this is my first post on lemmy, even though i’ve had my account for many years. i’ve always liked the concept of lemmy, but i never used it because it had a reputation for being the people who left reddit because reddit was not extreme enough.
i used to go through all the subs and i saw that the conservative subs were heavily downvoted. i assumed those were bots, because who in their right mind would spend their entire day downvoting things? although, i always kept it in the back of my mind that maybe they really were that crazy.
regardless, i stuck with reddit because, as bad as reddit is, it didn’t seem as biased as lemmy.
now that’s changed because reddit is censoring any post about these age ID laws. and that’s typical reddit. when its the most important, they censor you.
so now we are back to lemmy. and i guess this is the test. is lemmy an actual free speech platform? because what you are suggesting is completely insane. i grew up super left, and any discrimination based on race is racism. its wrong, and we do not tolerate it. but you’re calling us the far right…
no. just no.
now lets see if you can just flag my post and have it taken down for speaking truth (like reddit).
i was super impressed by all the responses so far. only yours is coming out of nowhere with something completely off topic. and you got the most upvotes. that’s concerning, but if you can’t censor, then i don’t care.
And I don’t fucking believe you grew up “super left”, unless your overton window has moved so far to the right that you see liberals as “super left”.
Now I have no fucking idea what your exact ideas are, but I will be assuming they largely coincide with Lunduke’s from the way you’re wording your temper tantrum. Here’s what I found about him in around 10 minutes of digging:
- He mocks and belittles people who are more than four times more likely to get assaulted and have sky-high suicide rates. His mocking isn’t even accurate. Even skipping over the fact that gender isn’t synonymous with sex, trans people who have medically transitioned ARE females. Sex isn’t just about the producing of gametes, that would mean infertile people (like women in menopause, or people just born without a functioning reproductive system) would be sexless. Sex is a combination of multiple biological characteristics, and achieving most of them (such as having the correct hormones) would make you fit the description of male/female.
- Seems to also be against vaccines. Definitely just “a couple of off-hand remarks”. I have seen other sources claiming this, and also him believing in other conspiracy theories too but I’m not willing to pay for his shitty articles so I guess I’ll never know how crazy he is in this regard.
- Anti-DEI, expressed in the screenshotted video. This is way too complex of a topic to discuss here, but here’s what I’ll chime in: DEI’s purpose is largely to mitigate the generational economic suffering caused by systemic racism from the past centuries. It does this by giving priority to applicants in minority groups. It doesn’t cause less qualified people to get the job, nor is it fucking racist to force companies to give both white and black people an equal chance at getting employed.
I doubt ML’ers will do much against you, but if they do you can just fuck off to X anytime you want if you want to be able to regurgitate lies your internet daddies told you (truth). That site welcomes such people.
I doubt ML’ers will do much against you
I’m pretty sure their comments will be removed if they go down in the right wing rabbit hole.
Slackware founder Patrick Volkerding https://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?p=6626190
"I’ll weigh in a little bit here, I guess. At this point, I’d rather not implement something like this and don’t see the point of the legislation as written (other than, more than likely, get a foot in the door.) But my code is my speech. I doubt these laws would survive a challenge, as it’s pretty clearly government compelled speech.
Any lawyers looking for a test case? :-)"
I can’t find anything concrete from Fedora but the Fedora leader was thinking of ways to comply in some manner a month ago and had more ideas recently
A month ago: https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/california-age-verification/181968
More recent: https://itsfoss.com/news/fedora-leader-suggests-age-verification-api/

This is what FOSS owned by non-profits that work as a facade to tech giants means, you can’t have free software if you don’t commit to keeping the motives free from shareholders and profits.
Damnit, I stopped distro hopping 2 years ago and settled on fedora. Here I go again
same here and i knew that tying my wagon to the ibm/red-hat corporate train would eventually bite me in the ass.
i hope debian & ubuntu don’t go the same way; they’re my most likely next hops.
I would not keep up any hopes on Ubuntu. Canonical will comply with any laws
i suppose that the same would be true of any distro that has live patching capabilities since all those distros are backed by a corporate entity afaik.
there’s something to be said about the open source world capitulating to such a degree that we’re going to have to regress to older offerings to escape the oligarchical capture that’s happening as well as little-to-nothing being said about it’s biggest figures silently endorsing this trend.
Move to Arch, Debian or Gentoo, the install process hurdles are age verification enough.
