They really will not be able to. He has fired 75-90% of many agencies’ employees. This is going to take decades fix, and every election we lose will extend that.
There’s also the fact that there’s an enormous machine of conservative think tanks and funding groups and PACs and corporations that will fight every and any change tooth and nail. The obvious ones like abolishing ICE? They’re an enormous source of revenue for dozens of companies, from tech to defense, not to mention that private prison companies are running the concentration camps. They’d need to be ready to effectively run things as a true dictator in order to get anything done, because large portions of the economic sphere have been retooled to rely on things continuing the way they are.
The executive branch also appoints people to hundreds of positions (with approval of the Senate). Federal judges in particular have lifetime terms per the Constitution. This is absolutely a generational mess.
If there’s a super majority Congress can just impeach them. I’m sure they’ve all done something worthy of it.
If the Dems gain full control of the House and Senate, and if they have the collective will to start a mass impeachment campaign and weather the political fallout, then yes, they could remove a lot of Trump appointees. But given the state of American politics, I am not optimistic about either of those things happening.
Not to mention international relations. He’s dumped on other nations so much. It will take a VERY long time to repair those relations, if they ever can be.
I’ve heard so many dumbass red hats crying that the US provided too much to other nations while getting little in return. They’re about to find out what we actually were getting in return. If other nations step up their militaries to fill in gaps where the US is abdicating its lead role, we’ll have less use for our own and can lower recruitment incentives/quotas. If we piss on trade deals with other countries, they’ll work more with China and other world leaders, stripping the US of its influence globally. Worst of all, even if their propagandist of choice have then that info, they are literally too stupid to understand.
Things the Executive can do alone:
- Executive order rescinding all Trumps EOs
- Abolish ICE and dissolve DHS. Trump did it with USAID so I don’t want to hear “Congress has to approve it”.
- Instruct the DOJ to prosecute ICE agents and investigate anyone on the Epstein Files.
- Instruct the DOJ to prosecute all Trump Admin officials. (Put Steven Miller in a pillory on the national mall)
- End all govt contracts with Palantir and Elon Musk’s companies.
- Hand Pete Hegeseth and Marco Rubio over to the ICC for boat bombings.
- Stop the White House ballroom and all other vanity projects.
Things they need Congress to do:
- End/Reverse Citizens United
- Expand the Supreme Court
- Impeach all Trump judicial nominees. Especially Emile Bove and Aileen Cannon.
- Expand the House of Representatives.
Truthfully, Trump has done irreparable damage to the US both domestically and internationally. I don’t think most of us will live to see it fully rolled back. The most important thing the next Dem president can do is punish the Trump admin. Show that there are consequences and the rule of law matters.
The most important thing the next Dem president can do is punish the Trump admin
Bingo.
It"s a tale as old as time. If bad behavior isn’t punished, it continues. The single most important thing the next admin can do is make sure there are HARSH punishments for the criminals and traitors in our midst.
Beyond that there needs to be serious pushes to expand the Supreme Court to address its corruption. And a million other things.
But yeah, you’re right. Most of us won’t live to see a full recovery from this. Everyone should remember that when interfacing with their conservative friends/family. If you still have them. I’ve broken ties because I don’t need that kind of filth in my life.
I would vote so hard for any party/candidate with all these items as their primary objective. But most of these sure as hell aren’t going to be on the Democrats’ plan of action.
Most of these are popular and achievable by someone who has the fucking guts.
“I hereby rescind any and all executive orders signed by president Donald Trump”
Executive Order of next Democratic president.
Of course that doesn’t fix the generational damage that has been done at a time when we don’t have generations left to fix the earth.
They can’t. Judicial appointments are for life. Laws require another majority in Congress to repeal again.
The place they’d have the most power over is the executive branch. They could rescind executive orders, replace staff, etc.; but “all of Trump’s bullshit” isn’t possible, never has been for any previous president.
If the next president is a Democrat and has the Senate and House, they still can’t. There’s decades of institutional knowledge that has been terminated - and those people aren’t coming back. Many of them are also Republicans, even after seeing the damage, and they won’t be working to return everything to the way it used to be.
The Trump administration - and don’t fool yourself, he’s a pawn - has months to sabotage the handover of key roles. They’ve spent the last year demonstrating that USA is not a trustworthy partner in trade or defence. Treaties need to be renegotiated and other countries won’t be interested in giving the USA the same consideration that the post-Marshall Plan world would. Democrats in the USA see Trump and his administration; the rest of the world sees that “the majority” of Americans voted for him and his policies, and even now there’s still significant support for him.
It’s unlikely, too, that it will be possible to end DHS for example. There’s too many people in too many high places that have relationships that depend on DHS people for support. PATRIOT act is another example. The dogma that it’s legal for ICE to inspect within the 100(?) mile border zone. These are significant intrusions on basic freedom and privacy but they’re also centralization of power.
That, and the Supreme Court is stacked.
Isn’t one of the desenting opinions from the supreme court literally giving the president such sweeping immunities allows them to assassinate political enemies Scott free?
Not a dissenting (against the majority) opinion; the actual majority opinion of the court.
