Can we really trust mozilla to be in charge of adblocking? It’s not like users have any power over firefox’s source code if mozilla decides that google ads are okay, for instance. I think it would be a bad idea to prematurely kill ublock origin and assume we’ll never need a community-supported adblocker again.

I also don’t want to have a dozen different crappy launchers from different companies to deal with. There are a lot of benefits to the user to having everything centralized in one place.

I wonder if there’s a future where every game marketplace uses open standards/APIs that 3rd-party launchers (like Heroic) can consume for downloading games, checking DRM status, tracking achievements, friends, and so on. DRM is probably the hardest part of that, though maybe there could be closed-source blobs downloadable to enable a store’s DRM. It’s obviously not in the interest of companies solely focused on profit and dark patterns, but I wonder if Steam would ever consider using its weight to do it anyway.

While I don’t think hypervisors are all that interesting to most people due to their brittle nature and real security risks, I still think there’s a definite blow being dealt to Denuvo even if not a single person actually uses them. The publishers making the decision to pay for Denuvo are still going to see their games being cracked same-day, hypervisor or not, and that probably puts a lot of pressure on their decision to continue paying Denuvo.

Absolutely not trusting this. Uninstalling until we know more, and ideally just getting a different solution entirely. A new account tried to impersonate Catfriend1 directly at first, and then they switched to researchxxl when someone called it out (both are new accounts). Meanwhile the original Catfriend1 has provided no information about this, and we only have the new person’s word as to what’s going on. There’s way too many red flags here.

Better yet, why put yourself at the mercy of something that can enshittify in the first place? I’ve never understood why people get into selfhosting and then go right back to giving power over their network to a 3rd party again.

Mailbox.org is a good pick to consider IMO. You can read some comparisons on PrivacyGuides, which I also recommend as a starting point for these sorts of topics. The mailbox.org web UI is not great, but it allows IMAP/SMTP access, so I use Thunderbird on both desktop and Android in order to interact with my inbox. My inbox is auto-encrypted with PGP using their Mailbox Guard thing, so my emails are all encrypted garbage on the web UI anyway. Mailbox.org only allows paid-for accounts, but considering the annoying stuff that Proton and Tuta do to their free accounts I’d rather just be honest about the service I’m getting. It allows auto-forwarding directly in the web UI, but given that you can hook up to it with IMAP anyway, it’s not like you couldn’t just do it yourself.

(Also, as another comment said I also recommend DuckDuckGo’s Email Protection for email aliasing if you need it.)
