The amount of times I’ve driven around the block to see if i closed the garage is way higher than the number of times that I’ve actually forgotten to. Which is zero.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•If earth is round, why do we send rockets up? Why not down or to the left or to the right? Wouldn't it be the same?
0·5 days agoRockets are not launched straight up. After getting off the ground they are angled toward the east (still mostly up) which is in the opposite direction of the earth’s spin. This allows the rocket to achieve a higher speed in relation to the earth and more easily reach exit velocity. This is why they are launched, in the US, from the eastern seaboard; they travel over water instead of land so that if things go wrong it falls in the ocean.
I’ve done a lot of work to make sure i don’t get ads in my various types of media. Because i rarely see them, i feel like i have less patience for them now. If it ever comes to the point where i can’t use youtube without seeing ads, I’ll just not use it anymore.
Google won’t mind seeing me go; they only see people as ad revenue or data points, and they’re not really getting either from me.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's an interesting etymology for a common term?
0·8 days agoThis reminds me of the bird called the canary which means dog. It gets its name because some islands were discovered that had a bunch of wild dogs, and they named them the Canary Islands (from canine). Later on it was discovered that a small yellow bird was endemic to the islands so they named it after the place they lived.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's an interesting etymology for a common term?
0·8 days agoI don’t think anyone has mentioned “helicopter” yet. It’s not heli and copter like you might think. It’s helico like helix meaning spiral and pter like pterodactyl meaning winged.
I always thought they liked riding the cow-a-bunga

Technology@lemmy.world•GrapheneOS says Google is making life harder for rival operating systems and devicesEnglish
134·8 days agoYes, but, from the article: ”GrapheneOS also says governments and banks are increasingly adopting these verification systems for things like payments, digital ID apps, and age verification services.
“Instead of governments stopping Apple and Google from engaging in egregiously anti-competitive behavior, they’re directly participating in locking out competition via their own services,” Graphene said."
But really, the second one is the actual truth. Beavers are fantastic for certain ecosystems, and if they need to spell it out for people to realize that then so be it.
Sorry, I’m a professional dog-sitter.

58·11 days agoJust because beer can doesn’t mean that beer should.
I also bought the Vive back in `16. Can’t believe that was 10 years ago! I moved two years ago though and never set it back up. I figured at the time that Valve would have a new headset that didn’t require base stations soon. Finally coming this year, so if someone wants to buy an OG Vive…

2·11 days agoOkay, that’s what “fries” stands for. Now what about “taco?”
Also fun how the horse can’t stop won’t stop until it runs a certain distance. Which is accurate based on some animals I’ve met.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How prevalent are cash transactions in the USA?
0·14 days agoI generally don’t use cash for anything.
However, I do purchase from farmers’ markets or local artisans fairly regularly. For the most part, they can take card via a cell phone-connected device, but there is also an understanding that they have to pay a percentage of the sale to the credit card company. I, and I think other regulars, often carry cash for these occasions.
Venmo and similar apps are another option, but they also want a cut if it’s a business sale, so some sellers prefer to steer clear of them as well.

Is it worse? It’s lower maintainance and water consumption, no? I’m not defending natural grass, which has zero benefits, but is this worse than that?
And yes, I’m aware that other landscaping options are better.
