  • I had worked at a theme park a couple summers. I operated one of the rides during a state inspection. It wasn’t a simple push the button and off it goes kind of thing, you manually controlled it. There were three big hydraulic motors with tires that powered the moving portion. The goal was to never equal the tires and I was good at it.

A new supervisor was promoted only because her sister was a manager already. She didn’t know how to properly operate the ride and was training others. I walked past one day to hear it roaring around one direction then the tires started screeching as it was hammered the other direction. I put in my notice the same day as that was my tipping point of stupidity, I wasn’t going to be there when someone was hurt or worse.

The supervisor who promoted her only did it to kiss ass, she complained she hadn’t had a single day off all summer because the new supervisor couldn’t perform the job.

  • Exactly. When my wife passed away the only thing we owned were personal items and one vehicle.

The collectors were sending demand letters for an estate of which there was none. Eventually I quit opening the letters and carried a marker with me to the mailbox. When something was sent to the estate of the address was blacked out, they had “return to sender - no estate” put on the front, and they were put in the outbox. After a few months they stopped coming.

If someone was coming to the door (didn’t happen in my case) I would simply have a page written up to hand them that states the person they are looking for is deceased and if they didn’t own anything that there was no estate. It would go on to say that they personally, along with any person’s they work with or for, as well as any subsequent agents are trespassed. If they contact you for the matter again law enforcement will be contacted. It would be handed to them and a picture of them would be taken after which the door would be closed.

The only way a family member can be held liable for a debt is if they have cosigned the debt.

  • Most ISP’s in the US are always looking for a government handout. When the government decides to tie that handout with a backdoor attached you will never know about it. If they control the router you don’t get a choice.

Not to mention they buy the cheapest POS they can get to do the job. Then when the wifi sucks they will rent you some mesh nodes. And you can only hope they update them if there is a flaw.

I run OpnSense and have for about 10 years now. I’ve considered using a gPON sfp module so I can get rid of the ONT.

  • Personally I would use something that can run OpnSense. Then grab POE access points for wifi, later on when a new standard comes out you just replace the AP instead of the whole router.

It’s an active project that is updated regularly. As long as the hardware supports X86-64 it should run with no problem. If you area looking to build a home lab IMHO it’s hard to beat.

I personally use a Supermicro X10SLL-F and a E3-1226 v3 with 16GB of RAM. Built it a few years ago for about 150 with an old PSU and case with a 120gb sata ssd and threw in a Mellanox ConnectX3 to run to my fiber backbone. I can squeeze every ounce out of the 1G fiber connection and run multiple vLan’s, Caddy and Let’s Encrypt acme client, plus a IPv6 Tunnel since my ISP doesn’t have native connectivity.

I’ve considered getting rid of the ONT and dropping in a gPON SFP module but honestly not sure if my ISP will be willing.

  • Desktop - Ubuntu Cinnamon LTS (I game and edit video this is also currently my Frigate host)

Laptop - Ubuntu Budgie (It’s basically just a thin client to access my desktop when I want to sit in the livingroom)

Stepson’s Desktop - ChimeraOS (Because I don’t want to deal with anything in his room)

Server - TrueNAS (Been using it since the FreeNAS 9 Era)

Router - OpnSense (Been using that since before I started using FreeNAS)

Different distro’s suit different needs. Could I use a single one for everything, yeah with a lot of extra work I don’t want to deal with. I’m much more hardware oriented and can make software work tried switching to Linux for everything in the mid 2000’s but couldn’t do things reliably with it till lately.

  • Done it a few times. I live in the US and have driven through a large portion of the lower 48 on my own. I’ve been in LA, NYC, DFW, Miami, Houston, Kansas City, Phoenix and the San Francisco Bay Area along other places. I’ve also traveled internationally a bit via ship all around the Caribbean where I often have to get around on my own.

I stayed in Montego Bay Jamaica for a little over two weeks at a hostel and walked around town visiting local stores, restaurants, and beaches. At one point I walked a little over 8K to had over to a dive shop and see some of the island.

On April 1st I’m getting on a plane to Cozumel Mexico for a little over three weeks. I’m staying at a hostel while I’m there and will be walking most everywhere while I’m there. The only time I will have a guide is when I’m diving, the rest of the time I will be own my own.

You have an opportunity to get out there and explore the world a little, meet new and potentially interesting people, and have the chance to try something you may have never expected. You can either take the risk or do the things you already have and pay it safe.

BTW learning to dive could provide you with some college credit. https://www.padi.com/college-credit And you would able to say you not only did that but traveled on your own to an island in a foreign country to learn and experience a new culture.

  • There was a game called Batallion that was super hyped about making an updated version of CoD 2. They were going to do real areas in WW2, use real weapon sounds and some other stuff. It sounded great but in practice it was awful… You had long halls where a guy would jump up and barely see his head and bang dead… shot through the wall. Couldn’t even attempt to fire back.

What fun is that? I mean honestly your in mid jump and you can hit someone on a regular basis?? Aim should be completely wild and maybe have a 5% chance to actually hit what you are aiming at. The physics of things were either all wrong or they had a rampant hacking problem.

It was so bad they ended up refunding all the purchases and giving it away. https://store.steampowered.com/app/489940/BATTALION_Legacy/

  • It’s funny. I’ve never really had money. Was worth about 10 million at one point (I was 1/3 heir to a building worth around 30 mil or so) and walked away because the family had issues and I’ve dealt with enough of my own family issues for ten lifetimes. Still broke most of the time but investing in my forever home is worth it.

If they hate their lives because of money maybe they should change things up and do something about it. Doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results is a perfect definition of insanity.
