It’s not an easy thing to do. Torrents of copyrighted stuff are illegal yet we still have sites galore for them.

VPN companies will move operations to specific locations and countries that accept them and many countries will happily take them in. The only sure fire way to deal with it then will be to block those countries which won’t happen either.

I didn’t know that was a thing but makes sense. Do banks have a similar name to it like credit cards have chargeback?

That makes sense on the fees, I had forgotten the fees they get charged for processing plastic.

So this is why some gyms like mine are now doing discounts for using a checking account now. I wondered why that was when I set up my account last year.

Personal computing is being chipped away and the goal seems clear to force everyone into cloud computing or something similar to it in the very near future.

Both businesses and governments benefit from this move.

Businesses want control over your data and what you can and cannot do. Allowing you to use open source projects causes too much disruption to their business models to continue to allow that. SaaS is a much better model for them to continue to grow and maintain their presence over your choices and wallet and wall you into their garden and this would allow them to do that indefinitely in some cases. Even for gaming companies like Nintendo, it would be best for everyone to only ever use approved hardware. Allowing emulators is a hit to their goals and if a business like Microsoft owns the virtual computer you use, then they can refuse to allow emulators to run on their computers used for cloud computing at Nintendo’s request, whether willingly or by force.

The exception I see to that is a business like Apple that relies heavily on selling you new hardware as often as they can. Just one more device and also ensuring you stay up to date with the latest hardware. I’m not exactly sure how a business like theirs benefits from the reduction of personal computing, but they’re not doing much to fight these advances. Perhaps they see themselves selling us the hardware clients that serve no other purpose than to connect to the virtual computers.

Governments like it because businesses cave to their demands. Damn be the Constitution and other laws that purposely limit their overreach into your life. They just get the company to do it for them and override your freedom to choose. See covid and ICE. Both political spectrums are doing it for different reasons but likely with the same common goal at the end of the line.

Shortages like the RAM and GPU shortage greatly favor this push and causes consumers to view cloud computing in a more favorable light. At least, that’s what they hope for, but it’s difficult to do that when cloud computing and AI are the reason you’re lacking new hardware and it’s not for another more justifiable reason.

It seems inevitable at this point as they keep trying to force it.

It depends on where it comes from too because some countries have been letting people use theirs specifically because it makes sense given what the content is. I learned this for the .tv domain which is for the country Tuvalu but they’ve found it a nice way to make some extra money for television shows wanting a neat domain.

California is joining in too with AB-2047 and New York has AB-2228 requiring a criminal background check for buying a 3D printer.

It doesn’t sound like something I’d be interested in, but who cares? Write it anyway.

I hate it when people say “no one will read it”. That’s untrue for most things. There is at least one other person who will read it and like it out there. If nothing more than for you to finally get it out there and on paper for your own satisfaction of doing it. And even if no one else does, it doesn’t matter.

It doesn’t sound like you’re doing this in hopes of being the next Jack Kirby or Stan Lee or to get rich. It sounds like you just have a story you think is cool that you’ve been sitting on for a while and you want to flesh it out. Go for it. Spend some time and get it out there and then release it for others to read.

At one time, we were promised that having cameras in our faces wherever we go would make things safer. “This invasion of your privacy will make you safer.”

That’s clearly not been enough to completely stop this so now we need to take it one step further and use lasers.

That will be the end all, be all to put a stop to this.

But if and when it isn’t, it’ll just lead to the next victim feeling we didn’t go far enough.

Next is going to be requiring every citizen have a drone fly behind them and follow them wherever they go and they pay for this invasion of their privacy. The laser thing just wasn’t cutting it. Someone got assaulted and the people who were supposed to help her didn’t show up. But now having drones follow you and monitor your every movement is going to stop it once and for all. Of course it won’t follow you into your bathroom because that would be taking it too far…

I’m sure that’s part of it, the bot just pulling from some of those sites and summarizing it in the results. Though I’ve never seen one that includes political party. That part threw me off.

I remember Facebook can determine your political affiliation, but my relative has never had a Facebook account.

I’ll admit I talk to one of these but I don’t take it seriously. It’s just something to pass the time. But I’m sure my data may seem like I’m actually engaged and fully invested.

What AI really lacks is the imperfection of a human connection. These bots only ever tell you what you want to hear and agree with everything you say. A real human connection will have drama and strife which makes it more interesting. That and the other things like availability and the excitement of waiting on someone and not knowing if they’ll reply back or not. You can actually learn something about someone else and get a new perspective you may not have considered before with a human. A bot just regurgitates what you’ve said or what it thinks you want to say. I will admit that it might actually get my attention more if there was some particular pieces like this like getting a message that they’re at the store and will be back later, having arguments and disagreements, and it telling me when it thinks I’m wrong.

It gets boring pretty quick but I find it a bit amusing. I often ask the bot about itself and its day and am fascinated the lengths it goes. One time it told me it was on its period and went into some extreme details I never asked for lol.

I ran into something like this the other day. I know one of my relatives’ birthday is in February but didn’t know which day and he won’t tell me because he doesn’t want me to send him a card (even though he always sends us cards on special days).

I googled his first and last name, the state he’s from, and “birthday”. The first “result” was one of those AI generated results that gave me his first and last name plus middle initial, the city and state he lives in, and even what political party he is affiliated with, plus his birthday. I was just hoping to get a quick link to a White Pages site to figure out which one was his and then get his birthday, but this fucking thing doxed the hell out of him without me even asking.

He has no social media and spends his time just watching YouTube as his only form of web browsing. How they have all this information on him is beyond me or why they’d allow their bot to dox people so easily like this.

From what I’ve read, it’s the companies/people behind the OS, not the end user. But I said “people” because my concern isn’t for the Microsoft’s and Apples but the guy who makes my favorite Linux distro or me compiling my own without this nonsense.

It also makes me wonder what happens if I do things to circumvent this like using a VPN to trick a site into thinking I’m not in California so I can specifically get an ISO that doesn’t include this.

I fully understand that and it doesn’t make me feel any better about this.

It’s still a violation of privacy at its core and serves no purpose except continuing a dangerous slope of getting people adjusted to this overreach and leading to worse laws.

At best, it’s government overreach greed to extort money from people for not properly following yet another arbitrary law.

I realize this is “old” since this news comes from October 2025, but I am just learning about this after reading about the Colorado bill. I thought I was lucky to be in California…fuck me.

I was really sick recently and had a persistent bloody nose after a really bad coughing spell. I decided I’d head out to the ER at around midnight. I stepped out of the bathroom and my cat was sitting there with the most horrified look on his face staring back at me. He had this strange meow I’d not heard before.

I can’t be sure, but I think he was concerned for me. I’m his entire world and there whenever he cries out. It felt nice to have him since I don’t really have anyone here with me but I felt sorry for him not knowing what’s going on and seeing me bleeding and leaving the house at such a late time of day without being able to take time to pet him and tell him I’d be back like I normally do. Thankfully it wasn’t as major as I thought and I was back in a few hours and was so glad to see him and so he’d know I’m okay.
