Refusalist. My art_anti-art owes you no beauty, meaning, labor, skill, or explanation. I spend all day painting, and I shitpost on Lemmy while I wait for each layer to dry. Nothing anyone says or does on here can bother me. My life is awesome! :)

Fuck Cars@lemmy.ml•The Myth of Mobility: Why Faster Cities Often Leave People Behind
0·1 month agoFrom article:
In many large urban areas, particularly those built during the late twentieth century, everyday necessities have been separated from residential life. Homes are clustered in residential zones while shops, restaurants, libraries, and workplaces are placed far away along commercial corridors or in large retail centers. The result is a city where nearly every basic activity requires driving.
On paper, this appears to increase mobility. In reality, it often reduces it.

Fuck Cars@lemmy.ml•We don’t just need electric cars, we need fewer cars
0·1 month agoI wish we had those here in the US!
Yeah, where I live here in Idaho (US) I am surrounded by nature. But when I go on walks and stuff, I can still hear all the cars around because he sound travels so far here. So annoying.
From 2025, and a great read. Excerpt that really stands out to me:
One theory is that growing up in a world dominated by vehicles puts them in a collective blind spot. In other words, car culture changes your brain. “It’s so endemic, it’s so pervasive, it’s so ubiquitous that people don’t recognize just how much it is all around them,” said Ian Walker, an environmental psychologist at Swansea University in the United Kingdom. “And if it’s all around you, it’s shaping your perceptions.”
Walker coined the word “motonormativity” to describe this bias, which causes people to apply laxer moral standards to driving than to other activities.

Fuck Cars@lemmy.ml•We don’t just need electric cars, we need fewer cars
0·1 month agoExactly this! Scoot on a nice smooth safe street or sidewalk is pretty safe if you don’t go crazy fast. But add in cars all around you, fucked up sidewalks, etc… it can be a fucking dangerzone every day

Fuck Cars@lemmy.ml•We don’t just need electric cars, we need fewer cars
0·1 month agoWhen I was growing up, I was a sci-fi nerd. I loved the idea of cool little electric cars. But the ones I’m seeing around here are huge. We’re also learning that even electric cars are fucking up the environment.
What I didn’t imagine is electric bikes and scooters. So that’s been a cool thing (I have both), but it has downsides too.
I volunteer at a local hospital, and we’ve seen a huge uptick of injuries from people riding electric scooters and bikes. The reason is that more people are on them, but our infrastructure in my city doesn’t support them very well. So people are having to ride on busted sidewalks, roads with no bike lane, etc. So a lot of people crashing them (and not wearing a helmet).
So I think the only we can really reduce car usage is to make the city unfriendly to cars. But that ain’t gonna happen here anytime soon. A strip of road near me actually was finally updated with a pretty wide bike lane last month because it’s close to a school, but holy shit, people in my neighborhood are still bitching about how we didn’t need it and it was a waste of resources. smh

0·1 month agoHere in the US, even used shitboxes are very expensive, and you never know if it’ll break down on you or not. When I was a teen, my first car cost $700 USD. Now for evne a used piece of shit in my area, they are around $10,000 USD

0·1 month agoHe creates alts and then reports and downvotes every single post regardless of subject. In DMs to me, he says I’m here to destroy Lemmy. I guess I’m doing that by posting links to news articles and talking about how cars suck?
Modlog of any of my community for “Good News”: https://discuss.online/modlog/1180572 Every alt is him. Guess he doesn’t like good news either. 🤣
At least he’s proud of being a stalker! But damn, what a boring choice of stalking.

I updated the story with your link. Thank you!
