L took a bit to start suspecting the supernatural, and he used a variant canary trap to narrow down the killer’s location, which at a minimum pointed to whoever was making decisions.

Comic Strips@lemmy.world•Pictures for Sad Children (Simone Veil)English
0·10 days agoAuthor was closeted trans, depressed, and taking a variety of drugs to self-medicate. She did a kickstarter to publish a book collection of the webcomic, was harassed by backers, and had a breakdown where she burned some of the ordered books before vanishing.
The book burning actually turned out to be kind of staged. She burned misprints, got someone else to handle distribution, and exploited the blowback to get away from the fandom.
I had a cat that did that. It was less of a bite and more of holding me with his teeth. He was always very happy and purring when he did it. It’s definitely not universal behavior, though.
She was originally intended to be his sister, but it never came up in the show and later shows separated them. And then put them back together in a decidedly non-sibling fashion.
And part of the reason the setting is almost never China in adaptations is that the original 1001 Nights version of the story is very much set in China in name only, with the setting being modeled after the Middle East anyway. I mean, there are two jinns, a sultan, and the sorcerer is from Morocco. And when characters are actually named, they have decidedly non-Chinese names like Mustapha.

News@lemmy.world•JD Vance warns the pope should 'be careful' when talking about theologyEnglish
1·1 month agoHe’s banking on being POTUS for the back half of Trump’s term. Trump could keel over any day, but if he’s still alive by New Year’s we’ll almost certainly see Vance try to remove him with the 25th. Once he’s in power, he just needs to be less batshit than Trump for two years and he’ll be in a good position to win an election.
Yeah, that wasn’t a good example since taste is weird. A better example would be that most people would agree that the pink background on this sprite sheet is almost painful to look at while other, more luminous, elements are fine. If our perception significantly varies, then simple mid-luminance color blocks shouldn’t have consistent effects from person to person. Parts of that yellow gradient on the right should cause more strain to someone you know than the magic pink field if perception is strongly variable.
The logic is based on perception, though. Colors either clash or go together because of how we percieve them and which colors go with which is pretty consistent between cultures and time periods.
Given that color theory works the same for anyone that isn’t some variety of colorblind, I’d argue we probably see colors the same way or very very close to the same.

News@lemmy.world•Humiliated Trump Storms Out of Catastrophic SCOTUS HearingEnglish
13·2 months agoAbsolutely. Judges do not like people pulling stunts in their courtroom, and unless Trump actually goes full dictator by disolving congress, he can’t touch them and they know it. He can’t intimidate them, so all trying does is piss them off. This might cause the conservative members to stop following his playbook so much, but it’s hard to say for sure.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Are there any story ripoffs that are actually good?English
0·2 months agoAvatar is absolutely not Dances with Wolves. It is Pocahontas. Throw in a couple musical numbers and it’s real close to being a shot-for-shot remake of the Disney movie.
In Spanish the word for pen can also be for a feather.
In English, too, with the word quill. Though the word now specifically means a pen made from a feather rather than a pen in general, and calling a feather that isn’t being used as a pen a quill is very archaic.
Really? I heard that you got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em, know when to walk away, and know when to run.

Technology@lemmy.world•Seagate just unleashed 44TB hard drivesEnglish
19·2 months agoSeagate drives are like crows - if you don’t get along with one, they tell their friends and harass you. For any given user, either Seagate drives are perfectly fine and last ages no matter what is done to them, or every single one they touch will self destruct with the lightest use for no reason. That it really does seem to vary by user rather than specific models or production runs is the baffling part.

The great thing about Dukat is that he frequently finds his own humanity. You keep thinking that this time he’ll do the right thing and start his path to redemption, but he never does. He always chooses to do the wrong thing even though there’s clearly good in him and you’re always disappointed and even surprised when it happens. He’s like the anti-Zuko.
