Unfortunately WhatsApp managed to take hold of the Zeitgeist during the early 2010s when some European carriers were still charging for texts or charging lots for data.

The fact Meta was allowed to buy WhatsApp is a travesty. We’re supposed to just trust that Meta isn’t lying when it says it isn’t looking at the E2EE keys? Come on. We have literal governments using it as a communication tool.

They’re just trying to push Graphene/de-Googled OS. Every third comment on this Lemmy community does that.

I notice apps closing on my Pixel 7 with 8GB every now and again, but it’s totally not a big deal for me. I can imagine certain users who swap between Reddit, Instagram and some game want more RAM, but most users won’t care or notice.

Part of it is longevity too, right? With phones being supported for longer and longer you kinda want more of a headroom as apps and OS become more RAM-heavy.

This 12GB limit probably isn’t going to stop me from upgrading, but I certainly wont be paying MSRP.

Do yourself a favour and just pay to replace your 9’s battery. Would keep you going until the 13 or even 14. That’s how I’m still using a Pixel 7 today.

I mainly want to upgrade for the improvements to the display, and for integrated MagSafe.

I get that on the face of it it’s a bad deal, but I don’t think RAM capacity is the only factor in a phone’s performance.

Given Pixel’s longevity these days, I wouldn’t expect Pixel 10 or even Pixel 9 users to be jumping to the 11 anyway.

I appreciate that they’ve dropped the 128GB model, but paying more for less RAM highlights the sad state of tech right now 💀

I held onto my Pixel 3 until I got the Pixel 7, and always said I’d wait for the 11. The 12GB RAM is still an upgrade over my 7’s 8GB, at least.

I can’t believe Lemmy doesn’t have a “Mute this post” option. I’ve gotten 300 notifications of Very Smart Lemmy Users posting their disdain for Reddit. You’re all the same person, I swear.

In fairness to Plex, I bought a Lifetime subscription during a Black Friday deal over a decade ago and it’s still serving me well to this day.

I have jellyfin set up ready to go but Plex has the UX down at this point. I’ll keep using it whilst my lifetime subscription remains valid.

Reddit blocked third party apps but they didn’t block personal-use API access. With the help of some apk-editing tools that I won’t mention here, you could import your own API key into a third party apps and continue using it fully (including posting and commenting). I’m using Reddit Sync still.

My API key still works, but my understanding is Reddit recently blocked the generation of new keys. So at some point my key will probably die too. At that point, that’s the end of Reddit for me.

Wonder how they feel about people like me, who use a third party Reddit app on Android? They get no ad revenue from me, and I don’t contribute either.

The self hosted calendar solutions have rubbish web apps, unfortunately. I’m pretty sure Radicale still doesn’t let you search your entire calendar for entries.

Obviously most calendar apps on desktop and your phone will have that feature, but that’s not exactly useful when you’re on a device you don’t manage and just wanna check your calendar real quick.

Nextcloud is overkill just for calendar, right?
