  • I can’t say conclusively, but evidence is that Scott’s bad at his job. Like, his old blog, which I’m not going to comb, has a post where he bemoans that he has never had a big breakthrough with a client. They never get up and dance and shout that they’ve got a new lease on life, etc. I have to admit a bias here: it would be gut-bustingly funny if Scott were just straight-up lacking the empathy required to engage with ordinary people.

  • I hope that you’ve gotten to see a compassionate side of our community which is usually obscured by our existential requirement to critique rationalism. I would like to see an end to abuse and cults, and I worry that I’m not working enough towards that goal. Without asking you to animate any particular grievance, what more would you see us do? In particular, what inaction of ours frustrates you?

  • Jordan wants to be a pilloried martyr because it means that he doesn’t have to be a thoughtful or skeptical scientist. Meanwhile he’s making more mistakes than the Mythbusters. Previously, on Awful, he was shilling for HarmonyCloak, now productionized as ArtyShield.ai. Personally, I disagree with Masley about the connection between infrasound and uncanniness; we have explained multiple paranormal reports by measuring infrasound on location and Masley gives no alternative mechanism. But I agree with Masley that Jordan’s units are sloppy at best and don’t pass a sniff test; they certainly don’t accord with my experience of being inside several different datacenters.

We really are suffering something of a Spiders Elon effect with the xAI datacenter, which is so poorly operated that it has generated a cottage industry of YouTube skeptic-at-home motte-and-bailey rants where folks pretend that all datacenters are equivalent. It doesn’t help that the youth seem to think that datacenters are 2020s tech rather than 1980s tech.

  • Good thoughts. Satanists also talk about LHP and it comes up in other contexts too, like Lila.

So, on Taoist vs. tantric vs. Buddhist perspectives, I would point out that Satanic sex magick (in slight contrast to Randolph’s work, fascinating link, thanks) doesn’t do yin and yang or separate-but-equal. Instead they borrow from some Classics, particularly Stoics and Epicureans, and are almost entirely focused on optimizing the man’s experience. They say that orgasms are gendered; male orgasms are a moment of blank emptiness and female orgasms are a prolonged wave of giving. Also, men are fallen and inferior, while women are born with an innate connection to nature and magick, somewhat like today’s tradwife meme that only women can produce babies. Sex magick is therefore about finding ways to empower men by channeling magickal energy from women to men. They do make a sort of symmetry with fluids, since they imagine that men always give fluids to women; life energy goes in one direction and sex energy goes in the other direction.

To be fair, Satanists of all stripes generally support equal rights for women, and that includes the magisters. They’ll say that Satan represents self-control, self-authority, self-agency, self-autonomy, etc. They think women should have the choice of whether to be auxiliary vessels who serve as magical sex conduits for a wizard with main-character syndrome. (Typing that sentence, I ponder: is occult Satanism an isekai?)

Putting this together, I’m now imagining the ideal Satanic interpretation of one of Aella’s parties as a sex ritual rooted in temptation. The superior man is supposed to sit on the couch, motionless, at peace with himself, not desiring. The superior woman, presumably the hostess herself, is supposed to tease and taunt him, putting herself into precarity, not denying. From that perspective, Aella’s making the mistake of over-privileging the fundamental male urge, or as we might put it in colloquial English, “encouraging rape.”

  • Part of it is sex-magick culture, carried in the Bay Area mostly by Satanists but also by some hippies. Basically, men are supposed to be “superior men”, which means controlling their desire to control and keeping it internalized instead of externalizing it onto their partner; women are supposed to be “superior women”, which means rejecting their desire to reject and keeping that internalized instead. Psychoanalytically, the superior man repeatedly fails to control his own expressions of safe and invited sexuality, leading to D/s play; the superior woman repeatedly fails to reject her own notions of restricted and volitional sexuality, leading to C/NC play. The superior woman is in control of the relationship outside the bedroom but the superior man gets to be sexually dominant in return. The superior man knows that he can humble himself to his wife but that’s okay because he still gets to determine when and where sexual relations occur; the superior woman knows that it’s okay to be a little girlbossy with their husband in social situations in exchange for giving up sexual control in private.

If I’ve made it sound a little bit like 1950s housewifey tropes, well then yes. If it sounds more than a little heteronormative and transphobic, also yes. TBH it also kind of reminds me of some of the ways that I’ve heard Tiktok tradwives talk about their relationships and maybe it’s part of a wider traditionalist theme.

Why would anybody be attracted to this? For sexually-listless people, there’s the suggestion that this theory neatly explains why they’re sexually unfulfilled. The theory’s analysis for men starts with the question “Why am I not more confident in the bedroom?” and for women with the question “Why am I not more open in the bedroom?” These are Barnum questions that apply to just about any sexually-mature person, but that can be hard to notice for anybody who is also struggling with feelings of insufficient masculinity or femininity.

Source: I studied lots of religions, including esoteric traditions, when I was younger. I’ve turned down sex from a Satanic polycule while visiting friends in the Bay Area. A card-carrying Satanic pick-up artist has tried to get me to buy his e-book about being a superior man, also while in the Bay Area.

  • Okay guys, I rolled my character. His name is Traveliezer Interdimensky and he has 18 INT (19 on skill checks, see my sheet.) He’s a breeding stud who can handle twenty women at once despite having only 10 STR and CON. I was thinking that we’d start with Interdimensky trapped in Hell where he’s forced to breed with all these beautiful women and get them pregnant, and the rest of the party is like outside or whatever, they don’t have to go rescue me, I mean rescue him. Anyway I wanted to numerically quantify how much Hell wants me, I mean him, to stay and breed all these beautiful women, because that’s something they’d totally do.

  • I don’t have any experience writing physics simulators myself…

I think that this is your best path forward. Go simulate some rigid-body physics. Simulate genetics with genetic algorithms. Simulate chemistry with Petri nets. Simulate quantum computing. Simulate randomness with random-number generators. You’ll learn a lot about the limitations that arise at each step as we idealize the real world into equations that are simple enough to compute. Fundamentally, you’re proposing that Boltzmann brains are plausible, and the standard physics retort (quoting Carroll 2017, Why Boltzmann brains are bad) is that they “are cognitively unstable: they cannot simultaneously be true and justifiably believed.”

A lesser path would be to keep going with consciousness and neuroscience. In that case, go read Hofstadter 2007, ‘I’ is a strange loop to understand what it could possibly mean for a pattern to be substrate-independent.

If they’re complex enough, and executed sufficiently quickly that I can converse with it in my lifetime, let me be the judge of whether I think it’s intelligent.

No, you’re likely to suffer the ELIZA Effect. Previously, on Awful, I’ve explained what’s going on in terms of memes. If you want to read a sci-fi story instead, I’d recommend Watts’ Blindsight. You are overrating the phenomenon of intelligence.

  • I’m going to be a little indirect and poetic here.

In Turing’s view, if a computer were to pass the Turing Test, the calculations it carried out in doing so would still constitute thought even if carried out by a clerk on a sheet of paper with no knowledge of how a teletype machine would translate them into text, or even by a distributed mass of clerks working in isolation from each other so that nothing resembling a thinking entity even exists.

Yes. In Smullyan’s view, the acoustic patterns in the air would still constitute birdsong even if whistled by a human with no beak, or even by a vibrating electromagnetically-driven membrane which is located far from the data that it is playing back, so that nothing resembling a bird even exists. Or, in Aristoteles’ view, the syntactic relationship between sentences would still constitute syllogism even if attributed to a long-dead philosopher, or even verified by a distributed mass of mechanical provers so that no single prover ever localizes the entirety of the modus ponens. In all cases, the pattern is the representation; the arrangement which generates the pattern is merely a substrate.

Consider the notion that thought is a biological process. It’s true that, if all of the atoms and cells comprising the organism can be mathematically modeled, a Turing Machine would then be able to simulate them. But it doesn’t follow from this that the Turing Machine would then generate thought. Consider the analogy of digestion. Sure, a Turing Machine could model every single molecule of a steak and calculate the precise ways in which it would move through and be broken down by a human digestive system. But all this could ever accomplish would be running a simulation of eating the steak. If you put an actual ribeye in front of a computer there is no amount of computational power that would allow the computer to actually eat and digest it.

Putting an actual ribeye in front of a human, there is no amount of computational power that would allow the human to actually eat and digest it, either. The act of eating can’t be provoked merely by thought; there must be some sort of mechanical linkage between thoughts and the relevant parts of the body. Turing & Champernowne invented a program that plays chess and also were known (apocryphally, apparently) to play “run-around-the-house chess” or “Turing chess” which involved standing up and jogging for a lap in-between chess moves. The ability to play Turing chess is cognitively embodied but the ability to play chess is merely the ability to represent and manipulate certain patterns.

At the end of the day what defines art is the existence of intention behind it — the fact that some consciousness experienced thoughts that it subsequently tried to communicate. Without that there’s simply lines on paper, splotches of color, and noise. At the risk of tautology, meaning exists because people mean things.

Art is about the expression of memes within a medium; it is cultural propagation. Memes are not thoughts, though; the fact that some consciousness experienced and communicated memes is not a product of thought but a product of memetic evolution. The only other thing that art can carry is what carries it: the patterns which emerge from the encoding of the memes upon the medium.

  • He very much wants you to know that he knows that the Zizians are trans-coded and that he’s okay with that, he’s cool, he welcomes trans folks into Rationalism, he’s totally an ally, etc. How does he phrase that, exactly?

That cult began among, and recruited from, a vulnerable subclass of a class of people who had earlier found tolerance and shelter in what calls itself the ‘rationalist’ community. I am not explicitly naming that class of people because the vast supermajority of them have not joined murder cults, and what other people do should not be their problem.

I mean, yes in the abstract, but would it really be so hard to say that MIRI supports trans rights? What other people do, when those other people form a majority of a hateful society, is very much a problem for the trans community! So much for status signaling.
