tuta or startmail probably

you can look at the privacy policy to see what they store unencrypted. tldr; don’t use if you suspect that governments are after you, but otherwise it’s fine. for governments i think protonmail is still the best option, but if that goes to shit, startmail is a valid alternative.

here, what the proton CEO is saying does concern the company itself, so it is a warning sign that things may get worse in the future.
this isn’t something i would immediately delete my account over, especially since i still have 2 years of VPN subscription left, and it’s still better than anything google; but i’ll hold off into putting more eggs into their basket, and see how it is after those credits run out.

that’s… mild. and doesn’t really have to do anything with mullvad itself (i am assuming here it was his own money, not mullvad funds). yeah, if people really wanted to boycott because of that then they should doubly boycott proton as well.

currently still using bitwarden but recently there’s been signs that the app might go full closed source in the upcoming years, and then start adding god knows what. i’d keep a backup of your passwords somewhere and be ready to move somewhere else if need be.

proton has good connection that barely cuts out even on the free tier. moreso a problem when websites block you or get cloudflare challenge often, but that’s a problem with all commercial VPNs. i just switch the node then, usually works.
port forwarding on the commercial plan is neat too for me, because i am behind CGNAT.
We are on a privacy forum so i feel the need to say that VPNs are only good for privacy if your ISP is spying on you (or they’re forced to by law enforcement), not much else. IP is a very fragile fingerprinting metric, most people get dynamic IPs as the “default” option. You’re basically trusting a VPN company instead, they have access to the same info as your ISP would without one; Proton has been audited multiple times at least, so there’s more backing to that no log policy than [[insert ISP here]]

atp, if you’re already moving services why not jump to one that guarantees that you will own your media, for free, instead of paying a subscription for something that may actively get worse down the line

capitalism machine prioritizing short term over everything else, working as intended.

i just hope this means people will start buying music again. 1-10 dollars for an album containing 5-20 DRM free music files is probably better value in the long run than spotify’s subscription ever was. and with navidrome, mpd, and its clients, managing them was never easier; plus artists get way more of that profit. everyone wins.

there’s some quantum versions of algorithms that scale better than the digital version. ranging from quadratic to exponential speedup. Notably very fast at breaking currently widely used encryption. We are only saved by the fact quantum computers don’t have the required processing power to be feasible to use yet.
There’s some encryption algos that are thought to be resistant against quantum attacks but due to the above this isn’t actually proven yet, so currently any “post-quantum encryption” is currently a marketing buzzword with nothing behind it.

It’s a temporary solution. they’re bound to enshittify if they ever come close to spotify’s popularity. or they’ll just get bought out before getting there

spotify single-handedly increasing music piracy rates back to napster levels
So, if Quad9 has admitted that geo blocking is insufficient when it comes to complying with bans, and that they were hit with a fine for doing that previously; how are they actually supposed to not provide services to french users anymore?
sure, but at that point you can just use any arbitrary unit if all you need to do is keep it in a rough ratio. the SI system is useful because it’s standardized, allows for precision, and you can easily convert units. A liter is a decimeter cubed, try doing that with feet and gallons.
but yeah, i agree people would benefit from more straightedge and compass construction skills instead of trying to read the milimeters of a measuring tape that’s not even guaranteed to be straight

yep, great for brown stock

is there something that makes this different to 17 other proposals for a new internet or is it just a case of

they’re great for caramellizing whole onions, but you could also buy a blowtorch
i am of course, talking in general, but many products can be made more sustainably without sacrificing quality, the method of looking for the most cost-effective way; while good for corporations, it is pretty wasteful.
preferably both policy, and consumer consciousness. starting with anything that’s single use for no reason, society forgot that recycling is third in the hierarchy, below reducing and reusing. wouldn’t it be nice if i could just buy ice cream and put it into a tub that i brought from home instead of having 10 identical, perfectly good plastic tubs that are to be thrown into trash? generally there’s too much plastic wrapping for products.
point being that one, or even 100000 people going full eco conscious would barely make a dent; while placing some barriers over corporations would hopefully reduce emissions substantially without sacrificing consumer convenience.
that $220M is pennies compared to what they got from selling that data
