  • “Correcting” incorrect information with more incorrect information doesn’t improve the situation.

AI tools are inherently unreliable because of the randomness in their text generation algorithms.

And worse, Europe doesn’t build its own AIs. LLM fact checking would have to be done by Grok or Claude or some other product from big American tech. And there’s an obvious problem with a social media network trying to avoid American censorship and political bias and corporate domination but “fact checking” with a tool that has American censorship and political bias and corporate domination built into it.

And on a personal level, I don’t want to use a social media site that has a bot scanning my posts and flagging them for wrongspeak - or that interjects automated bot opinions into conversations between humans. I use social media to talk to other human beings, not bots, thanks. If I wanted to know what chatGPT thinks of a post I’d fucking ask chatGPT.

  • That’s the thing. Gardening is more expensive than buying food, in the United States and Western Europe, now, because the real cost of food production is heavily subsidized by our governments and we guarantee yields by throwing tons of fossil fuels and their derivatives at the soil of corporate megafarms. There’s a nonzero chance that’s going to change shortly - probably within a generation - for a ton of reasons including but not limited to little Donnie assassinating the supreme leader of Iran for shits and giggles.

Grow a garden even if it’s not economically efficient. Do it now, when you aren’t relying on it for food, and get the issues with soil and drainage and so on worked out now. Learn to save seeds and select the best growing plants each year so that, as your climate changes, the varieties you grow change with it. That way you’ll have the skills to do it later, when you really need it.

  • Epistemic bubble assed comment right there.

Kirk may not be getting mainstream media attention right now, but he’s still revered as a martyr on the right. Statues of him are going up in every state. High schools in Texas added him to the curriculum of civil rights leaders next to MLK. College Republican meetings still begin with a moment of silence in his memory. And my God, the fundraising in his name is relentless.

Hell, MAGA is getting into slap fights about whether he would have supported the invasion of Iran - and isn’t the strength of a dead man’s legacy shown by how many people twist his words to claim that legacy for their own?

If you think the right buried Kirk’s death, you haven’t been paying attention.
