Is your point supposed to be “it would be a relatively small pile of radioactive waste”? There aren’t all that many nuclear power plants in the world because it never has been economically viable.
How did nobody recommend I’m a Train by Albert Hammond??

Technology@lemmy.world•Microsoft drops Copilot branding in Notepad for Windows 11 for everyone, but it’s really just a renameEnglish
13·19 days agoThere is what used to be the “Mail App” that was introduced with Win10. That was renamed to Outlook. A new Outlook was then installed automatically that was called Outlook (new). At some point, Outlook was renamed "Outlook (classic) and Outlook (new) was renamed “Outlook”. On top of that there is the Outlook that is part of the MS Office suite, if you have that installed.
I’m not entirely sure how accurate my memory of this desaster is, though. I don’t use Windows on my personal machines, I noticed this on a friend’s computer I was fixing.

Bikes are incredibly cheaper than cars, cars need new tires more often, car tires are way more expensive, you can make tires without fossil oil. I’m not sure I get your point. What was your point?

Technology@lemmy.world•Federal Bill Would Bring OS-Level Age Verification to the Entire U.S.English
8·28 days agoThe German ID card has that functionality. Date of birth is saved on the chip card and you can identify yourself via NFC reader and the open source ID app. You can see what information is transmitted before sending it. In the case of age verification, it would only be “underage yes/no”. It’s not perfect but pretty good from a privacy standpoint.
Stupid question, but does pihole offer any substantial benefit over using a remote ad-blocking DNS like AdGuard or whatever?
Oh, yeah I wasn’t joking. I had been depressed and anxious since puberty and didn’t really understand that (because “that’s just how life is, right?”) until I developed actual panic attacks and started therapy. Turns out I’m also autistic and have severe ADHD and that I’m not the lazy loser I thought I was. Therapy also enabled me to access and process my feelings a lot better, which helps me be a good partner. I simply wasn’t ready for a relationship before all that.
I was almost 30 when I first kissed someone, had sex, fell in love. She’s the first and will hopefully be the last and I wouldn’t change a thing. (Except I should have gone to therapy 10 years earlier)

1·1 month agoYeah NTFS is not a great experience indeed. You can only do so much without it being open source. But I also experienced issues with mounting ext4 or btrfs. It’s not a dealbreaker for me, but it tends to irritate new users while it seems easy to fix.

2·1 month agoAbsolutely! I’ve been on Linux since 2017 and KDE Plasma since 2019-ish. It outperforms Windows even in terms of usability/ease of use in most cases. My 70+ years old, tech-illiterate parents happily use it.
But things like mounting and partitioning make me scratch my head. KDEs partitioner requires sudo rights to even start and then formats partitions in a way that you need sudo rights to access it. It’s annoying and would be very easy to fix.

4·1 month agoIt’s absolutely bananas that internal drives are not mounted automatically by standard. It’s even more bananas that it’s not easily customizable via GUI. Gnomes partitioning app can somewhat do it I believe, in KDE’s partitioning app, it was completely broken last time I tried. Either way I lost two people back to Windows because of this
I saw a bug report when KDE Plasma 6 was released that the cursor keeps growing indefinitely. A dev responded like “yeah I noticed that but decided it’s actually a great feature”
