It goes beyond name calling. Microsoft has a strong history of destroying open standards–even has their own wikipedia entry on their strategy: embrace, extend, extinguish.

What are the problems you’re facing with codeberg ?
I don’t particularly have a problem with Codeberg or with GitHub, but if I were doing a software project and it were GPL-licensed and I didn’t have an existing presence anywhere, I’d probably look at the FSF’s Non-GNU Savannah. I have a pretty high level of trust that anything that the FSF does is going to be okay (and, frankly, it’s one of the few organizations where there is necessarily a fair bit of trust in that the FSF can create updated versions of the GPL that GPL-licensed software can be used under anyway), and they’ve been running that forge for…checks…24 years now. I would bet that 24 years from now, it’ll probably be more-or-less the same.
EDIT: I would add that it’d maybe be kind of interesting to have some kind of distributed forge. I mean, git is intrinsically distributed, but as I talked about in a recent discussion, issue-tracking isn’t (though there is a distributed git-bug that I discovered in that discussion), and while you can do code review via email (and email is distributed), a lot of people use non-distributed Web frontends on forges for it.
Like, I think that it might be nice to just make forges distributed, make people not rely on centralized infrastructure in general.

My personal Codeburg issues:
- Consistently has had scaling issues
- Forgejo, codebergs self hosted option requires too much manpower/manual work and/or custom ansible work compared to others (plenty of complaints on their forums and blog topics from codeburg on this)
- Limited support, lack of binaries for different OS’s and arch types
- We don’t use K8/docker containers for production use (manpower limitation more than anything)

I mean, if you’re okay using that, the example per-site configuration there is like…36 lines of YAML.
EDIT: Oh, the example doesn’t set up TLS, and I guess probably most people would want that.
Codeberg. It’s OSS, whereas I don’t believe Gitlab or even Gitea are anymore.
Gitea is open source, it uses the MIT License.

I use GitHub. Heavily. VERY heavily. But I only use the git part of GitHub.
Why? Because:
- The stuff I host on GitHub is open-source, so it’s public, and Microsoft therefore has no monetizable data from me.
- Since I only use git, I can migrate my repos anywhere else within minutes. Microsoft has no vendor lock-in on me.
- I waste Microsoft’s resources and they have nothing to show for it.
