Might be useful from a compatibility point of view if things like Play Integrity aren’t required. Using privacy as the main selling point seems a bit dishonest however, since apparently they’re trying to be yet another bridge to the traditional payment system.
Call me old-fashioned but I like cash.
Hi old-fashioned
Honestly not sure if I trust this shit but I’m at least intrigued
Not FOSS. Connects to the internet. Yeah, I ain’t putting my debit card into that, even if I can disable the network access as a Graphene user.
Yeah that’s why you use a credit card instead
Ew.
It’s not FOSS but parts of its implementation can be seen here https://github.com/walt-app
My CC has been skimmed several times. CC company always takes care of it. NBD.
I might be getting old, but I find tapping with just the physical card simple enough that I don’t want to bother with these digital solutions… If some truly private and open solution comes I’d happily use it, but I think hell freezes sooner… 😀
I bet you have forgotten your wallet more times than you’ve forgotten your phone
I don’t forget stuff (yet). On the contrary, I remember when I was using my phone, leaving my wallet home, because “i didn’t need it” and then it for some reason didn’t work and it was quite embarrassing. Happened to me more than once, so I ended up carrying my wallet with me anyway… Technology have a weird tendency to stop working at the exactly wrong time! And I say that as a long time developer. 😅
My issue has been places that have made it hard to get a physical card, like transit cards can be a pain to get to an office during the hours they’re open and wait in line forever. You either have to pay cash or use Google Wallet/Apple Pay but credit/debit cards aren’t supported. It seems like it’s becoming less common, thank goodness. But still run into it here and there. I’m glad both Seattle and San Francisco transit systems now all accept credit/debit cards, though I don’t really trust the security of those transactions as much, so I still kept my transit cards. Also, though, it makes a big difference that at least those two systems will just wave you on in case the system or your card is not working properly. Some cities the drivers still have to enforce and will turn you away if something technical goes wrong and you don’t have cash.
The only benefit is that I’m already dicking around on my phone to avoid small talk, so it’s right there.
