Chrome adding vertical tabs is not innovation, it is catching up to a feature Firefox has had for years. Browser makers compete on features they can market rather than the ones users actually need. This is the state of the web in 2026.
Even Microsoft Edge has had this for at least a year if not more.
Chrome vertical tabs five years after Firefox and Safari had them is not innovation. Google deliberately held the feature back to keep Chrome cluttered and drive people to use more tabs, which means more page loads, which means more ad impressions. The user experience was never the priority.
