      Is it an exhaust pipe? Why does it have holes on the sides? Or does it not actually matter at all, so long as the exhaust gets out somewhere?

        There is usually a flexi-pipe inside like shown in these. They are used to help with noise from rattling (and to of course provide a bit of flexion which prevents leaks)
