That is not really the same, Signal is a donation and Proton is a subscription where a monthly (or yearly) request has to go to the payment provider for your fee, for this you need to keep the payment information on file and linked to the account. Signal can say I got donated by someone but they do not need to keep this information linked to a specific user, just the payment record (that still has your cc/bank details on it) for tax purposes.
That is exactly what they did, the user used a credit card with their damn name on it, while Proton even allows you to send them cash money for the service.
The FBI filed a MLAT (Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty) request which was processed by the Swiss Federal Department of Justice and Police.
The Swiss gave a legal binding order to Proton to hand over information that they had, the only information that was handed over was the payment identifier.
I don’t get why people get hung up on a company complying with a legal order by their justice system, especially with Proton that could not hand over any more information.

0·2 months agoI gave my old WH1000XM2’s away to family because it was sitting in a drawer after I bought the xm4, both still work like a charm and the xm2 only has a slightly reduced battery even after being used for 6+ hours daily for years. I don’t know what the quality of the newer ones are, but the older ones are build to keep working. The noise-cancelling is the best one on the market for over ear headphones, the Bose ones put pressure on your ears which is really uncomfortable even after a few minutes (at least for me).

Not really, Valve has a dominant market position because they have done no moves to against their consumers (although they did mess of a few times in the past) and have always tried to resolve issues. The other companies keep shooting themselves by continuously implementing anti consumer rules, horrific handling of their customers, or just have the worst implementation of their version of a launcher. Their support behind Proton has been a enormous and the main reason why pretty much every game I own works on Linux.
Getting back to the case though, the whole reason Steam has that big of a market share is because they seem to care about their customers, create tools that can be used for non steam games (like the controller adapter layer, or Proton).
So it’s not like the other billion dollar companies can’t, they just won’t create something that comes even close to what Steam is offering in software, hardware and their support behind the products.
