At the time sports games were rather boring. That game was so fun because you could use the field dangers to do better, and better utilize your team with its flaws to overcome better teams if you were smart about it. There was also a mutant hockey league game that was just as fun, if not moreso because it was faster, which made it easier to hit those environmental dangers.
