  • They’ say they’re doing it for women’s safety, which makes sense. On its face I agree with you that it should be global, to let everyone express their preference for whoever. Assuming men create most of the harassment/assault issues, though, it could be a bad idea to give those same men the ability to get a woman (or a man) delivered to their location at the push of a button. We could even see cases of that ability attracting unsavory types who would otherwise not even consider using Uber. I don’t exactly put a lot of faith in them creating a culture of safety that would prevent it. I myself prefer not men as drivers, and would like the option, but I’m also not a fuckin’ creep.

  • I’m a man, but I also prefer women drivers. Their cars tend to be better taken care of and cleaner. they also do a lot better at respecting and pre-empting preferences in regard to heat/music. Maybe it’s just my area, but I’ve actually never had a “normal” experience with a male Uber driver.

Either their car is all clapped out, it’s dirty and smells bad, they’ll be blasting MAGA rap, or they get real weird with the dropoff. (Like, bro my legs do function and I can walk across the street or down the block a little bit, it’s ok, I gave you a different address from where I’m actually going anyway). Never had any issues like that with women as drivers.

I get that they’re doing this for reasons of rider safety, but they should let both men and women express a preference.

  • One of the perks of working for a tech company on a hybrid schedule. They inventory the issued laptops, but that’s about all they have time for. And every once in a while they clean out and let us take stuff home. After 5-ish years, I and the people closest to me will always have monitors, monitor stands, at least one working UPS and all the peripherals, HDMI and Ethernet cables we could ever need.

  • Story time:

I was over in rural Western Ireland at the end of 2023 when I was given a white 1st gen iPod touch by a relative who was cleaning some junk out of the house. I had previously expressed my soft spot for tech history, so this wasn’t completely random, and they would have binned it otherwise.

It was seemingly unharmed by the intervening years albeit missing a charging cable. The weather outside was what the Irish, with their particular brand of sardonic humor, might describe as “a soft fine day”, and what I would refer to instead as “a relentless bone-chilling mist”. We had no plans that day.

So I found a computer shop, a tiny place in the nearby village, thinking they might have this specific proprietary cable. I make the drive, tell the guy (who presumably owns and runs this tiny shop) what I’m looking for and he has no fucking clue. I couldn’t really blame him though, because Apple had just gone to the USB C standard at this point, at least in Europe, so this was a cable 2 generations of proprietary connectors ago. Not the previous “lightning” cable with 8(?) pins, but the OG one, the wide fucker with hella pins. Some of you might remember these, as they were seemingly in every room, car and backpack circa 2010.

The guy had a pegboard on the wall behind him with all his wares hanging up. I scanned the various cables, adapters, and peripherals until I landed on my quarry, a small white box containing “cable: 30-pin apple dock connector to USB A” in trademark Apple white. It was the very last one. I forked over 8 euros for the thing, expressed my immense surprise and appreciation to the shop guy for having stocked this kind of item and went back home with it.

I started charging up the iPod. Not only did it take a charge and boot, it was unlocked too, and worked flawlessly! The thing was a veritable time capsule – chock full of era-appropriate pop music, mundane notes and voice memos, and even some silly photos and videos taken with the shitty little onboard camera.

My wife still ribs me for this one: the time I “spent a whole day of our Irish holiday ignoring us to play with obsolete tech”, but for me it’s a very fond memory, and I’m serious about that. I still have the device in its unaltered form and I go through its contents now and again, and that reliably brings me a rare sort of joy. All because some dude decided to hang onto a single cable long enough to forget what it was even for, allowing it to take up precious shelf space in what may be the only tech shop in Connemara. He must have figured that someday someone would need it!

  • IIRC AA leverages Bluetooth to avoid audio conflicts and to further verify you’re connected to the correct vehicle. Some setups use it to know when to power up/power down the vehicle’s AA hardware. (At least, I have a dongle that does this, because the car is stupid and allows power to be drawn over its USB port when everything else is off.)

It’s optional and not really needed.

  • This does not refute your bonus point, because this is going to depend on who you are. Everyone is different, so ymmv, but as a systems thinker with VERY pronounced ADHD, counting (while it works on paper) has never actually worked for me past the first few weeks.

In my experience, though, when I am exercising, yes I may eat a bit more to replace what was spent, but I’m put in touch with my body a LOT more, and get clearer signals for what to eat. This often ends up becoming a kind of feedback loop, because I’ll start craving healthier foods that contain more micros, and are less calorically dense whole foods - mostly plants. I’m no longer eating just to get through, but responding to my body intuitively, which significantly reduces the cognitive load of “gotta eat healthy foods”. This is self-reinforcing too. As new microorganisms from specific foods colonize the gut, it pushes the brain to want more of those foods. (Sounds crazy, but it’s true.)

For example, maybe I’ll want a chopped up head of iceberg lettuce with shredded beets/carrots, SMALL portion of chicken/salmon/tofu and a piece of fruit instead of just that dense protein bar or bag of chips to keep me going. Good luck gaining weight on the first one - you would literally not have enough time in the day to prepare, eat and digest an amount that would add any weight.

Exercise doesn’t have to be crazy strenuous either. Just moving at all helps, and low impact movement can help tremendously with the aches and pains that can come with extra weight. OP is very young, and might not be feeling it yet, but she will.

Walking, swimming, cycling, and yoga are all fantastic places to start out, and those activities do have varying levels of accessibility but they’re still all very achievable for the vast majority of people.

CICO is fundamental science at the level of basic physics, but there’s also human psychology and the brain-gut connection to contend with. Layering other things on top of CICO, to that end, could result in compounding effects which accelerate and complement a foundation of rote calorie counting. A whole-system approach that integrates movement, nutrition and food prep skills together with intuitive eating is very much worth trying and is more likely to last long term IMO. With enough practice, this became a new normal. I feel great, keep a healthy stable weight and don’t even think about calories anymore tbh.
