People called it “AI slop”, so I deleted the post.

Are AI memes just automatically considered slop now? I could have totally spent an hour making this picture with Gimp or something. An hour versus 10 seconds. for a meme.

I get the hate for endless low-effort AI garbage, but it’s a meme. Memes have always been people throwing stupid shit together with whatever tools they have.

So where’s the line? Photoshop good, AI bad?

All AI is slop, yes. Slop is anything made automatically without purpose, and while the human might have written a prompt with purpose, the computer can’t have purpose itself. Love photoshops, though!

I deliberately make my shops bad now because I don’t want them to be confused with AI. A lot of times I’ve even gone back to cut out collage and photo copier made zines that never make it to a digital format (well sort of because most coppers are digital now).

I know there are plenty of efficient single gpu models out there, but I still assume most people are using data centers for image generation.

Also there is just something off putting about the style of most AI generated images, audio, and videos for me.

I’ve seen very few instances of very specific and fine tuned LoRAs/workflows that I would consider art/acceptable use. But the majority is just wasted electricity, rage bait, misinformation, scams, and slop

AI is worse than Photoshop yes. Because Photoshop still requires human effort.

Dude I agree with you and I’ve made this argument on here many times before but people aren’t having it.

I think shitposting and memes is an actual use case for AI and I think people hating it just to hate on it is ridiculous. Like absolutely stupid.

Making shitmemes with AI isn’t taking your job away. It isn’t stealing from a real artist. IT IS A SHITPOST

People take this shit way, way too seriously.

Now, video games or magazines or something where someone would usually be paid to produce something yes then its a problem.

I have nuanced opinions about AI and, personally, I don’t really care how you make your memes if they’re interesting – though I will strongly discourage you from paying anyone for AI as a service to do it…

The “in 10 seconds” bit makes it really easy to flood communities with slop though, and that’s one of a number of reasons why people push back on it. There is a lot of boring AI generated stuff out there. Repetitive, same-y content is not fun – novelty is fun. If you can figure out how to push AI to do something unusual or amusing, I say have at it… but the haters are going to hate here regardless.

We had a subculture here for a while back in 2023 or so that played with AI memes. Someone would come up with an amusing idea – like Sailor Moon as a giant insect – post an AI generated picture of it, and then people would riff off it with variations of the idea until it became stale. I think those comms are basically dead at this point – and if you tried to revive them back you might get shouted off the platform given the amount of toxicity around AI now 😔️ – but there was some genuinely entertaining stuff in there occasionally!
