Where I went to college, one of the frats just the year before I started had gotten kicked off campus because at a party at the frat house, some of the members beat up a pledge and kicked him down the basement stairs and he broke his neck and died. His corpse wasn’t discovered until late the next day. Nobody was punished criminally because they couldn’t identify who had actually done it, so the expulsion of the frat was the only penalty. The frat house got turned into a dorm for international students, and every few weeks members of the fraternity (which still existed but off-campus) would run through the building and trash the public spaces and harass any international students they encountered. These students were in a constant state of fear because of this.
To my great surprise, this college a couple of decades later banned all greek organizations entirely. It was a pretty wild decision because when I went there, 90% of the students were in fraternities or sororities. Good riddance.

I guess I just don’t get it. What value does frat membership have that people are willing to put up with this crap? The closest I ever got was freshman hazing in high school, and when the seniors wanted me to do something stupid, I just walked away. Like, what were they going to do? Tell a teacher on me, or something? (The hazing kept up until a freshman fell and broke his arm one year, and that was the end of that.)
The pledges need to grow spines and start calling the school or the police if things get out of hand.
Eta: now that I think about it, we had hell week in college. Most of it was silly, and I just ignored it. (And ignored it when I was supposed to be running it.) A senior confronted me and told me if I didn’t want to participate, then maybe [school name] wasn’t the place for me.

It’s the far right side of school life, where the frat is a hierarchical in-group. The pledges put up with it for access to the priviledges that come with being in the group and ones that go through with it have a mix of a) thinking it’s paying their dues now to reap the benefits later, b) don’t appreciate how much it might escalate until it does, and then have peer pressure and sunk cost fallacy driving them to continue, and c) the escalations might also excite them because if this is what they have to put up with to get in, if this is acceptable for senior members to subject junior members to, just imagine what the frat will let them get away with when they are full members or senior members. It’s like the “it’s ok for billionaires to treat my class like shit because I’m planning on joining them one day” mindset, except with an actual path to joining them soon.
There might also be some S&M aspects to it where some on the M side even enjoy it, though I can’t really relate to that myself so it’s only speculation.
To make it explicit, one of the benefits pledges look forward to are group organized parties where they can have easy access to women to try and sleep with them.
I remember going to some sketchy ass frat parties back in 08-09 in Berkeley CA (no relation), it was like a cute lil date rape factory.
It’s also a way for them to reestablish the old boys clubs for the modern day, at least for some of them. The “right” people will get in and then have connections they can turn to for things like getting a job after school, and since there’s no standard hazing program, they can just go extra hard on any poor people or minorities that mistakenly join thinking they. too, will be afforded opportunities in the future if they put up with it. Then they can just keep raising the stakes until either the pledge drops out, or they decide that this person is willing to take enough outrageous abuse from them to be worthwhile to string along to keep as a future lackey/scapegoat.

These days, ppl don’t let strangers into their homes, many feel the need to join to literally have somewhere to go on weekends that isn’t the dorms. Most dudes Ik in a frat dropped a year or two in once they knew enough ppl to go out on weekends and hangout at different houses without needing the frat. Most may not be accurate, a lot of people stay. Tbh I only got away with having fun drinking and partyhopppng because many of my friends were in frats and would let me in.
Also they get laid a lot just by being in a frat, the amount of woman I had act thirsty over me asking what frat I was in just to lose all interest when I said none is hilariously high. Obv not all women, but a good small amount does like fucking dudes just because they are in frats.
Throwing parties yourself or with your friends sucks, it gets dirty really fast, unless you have someone watching the door like frats do it gets packed with freshman who desttroy your home every time. Everytime I kicked people out of my own house for it randomly getting packed they broke something on the way out.
From what I’ve heard of hazing, it’s realtively tame compared to what it used to be. They try to avoid getting banned off campus or are trying to come back on after being banned typically. Most fked up things I heard at my school was being chased in a forest with paintball guns and needing to chop a tree in teams (which got that frat banned since it was protected land)
Then there’s hell week where they toss them in a basement and throw flour and oatmeal type sht (claiming its vomit) at them while telling them it’s actually gonna be 2 weeks.
I had the same experience at frat parties, hella flirty until you disclose you actually just showed up here with hot women and were allowed in under that set of rules. Someone mentioned the far right hierarchy aspect and the ladies were hella into that part.
Imo some of the ppl that join frats need them, it’s the only adversity they’ll face. I’ve known npc type ppl with no personalities that join a frat and come out actual ppl, idk if its the frat or just being in college tho. There are plenty of ppl that make no friends and have minimal interactions so the forced interactions through a frat could be helpful. Kinda forces them not to be incels/redpill (I think most ppl would imagine thats the type of person who joins a frat, but its the type of dude they hate and wouldn’t allow near them), at least the ones I knew of would basically drop anyone who couldn’t talk to girls or bring them to their events, so you have to be able to be friends with woman.
And a lot of the sa that happens/happened wasn’t people in the frats, it would be random ppl they let in, which is also why only frat members or people who know them and come with 2-3 girls are allowed these days. It’s like a social credit check. Still happens, still have sus frats and members, but the rate is much lower for a reason.

Status, access, dont forget a lot of these kids are rich rich, so trying to get that golden handcuff on early. Probably just an in group / out group dynamic as well. I never got to specifically ask, but i spend a lot of time thinking about it 20 years later. We were all about partying and the frats had the biggest parties, and they were somewhat exclusive. If you’re joining these orgs youre porbably looking for like minded people. im sure some of it was harmless, some of it was stupid, and some of it was social. but boy it was a very real phenomenon. I remember reading somewhere that the earliest college frats modeled themselves after Freemasonry. Yes, that Freemasonry; the subject of so many outlandish conspiracy theories but, in reality, is just history’s oldest rich guys’ geek club. But the Masons at least try to have a good image.
College frats (especially Americans) are the epitome of Suburban and Middle Class degeneracy that it astonishes me that they’re still a thing. Why any university would allow them operate on their campuses is beyond me.

hazing is what happens when you fill leadership roles with sociopaths and/or bad science.
Hazing is kind of like bullying, but typically in a group of people to which you’re trying to belong. The older members will bully the younger ones, often with ridiculous requirements with the end goal of forming cohesion between the younger cohort with the understanding that older ones did the same. The intent, similar to what some types of military do, is to break you down and build you back up together. THIS IS IN NO WAY AN ENDORSEMENT OF THESE PRACTICES.
usually happens at more prestigious, sem-prestigious colleges, where its a rite of “iniation, passage” to get accepted into the club. the frats usually have connections for job hunting for these types sometimes.
Sort of a rite of initiation for frats or school cubs, or even schools; the freshmen/pledges have to do embarrassing or stupid things to pass and be able to join. Unfortunately it happens in the military as well, even though it’s absolutely prohibited.

Remind me again why anyone tolerates these clubs full of alcoholics, date rapists, and psychopaths? Frats make zero positive contributions to society, ban and disband them all nationwide.
It’s a long chain sunk-cost-fallacy. It starts with going to a party at the house and seeing all the guys and their camaraderie and realizing you are on the outside of that. Who doesn’t want to belong somewhere? You can build your own friend and family tribe over time but a frat gives you a whole community at once, a name, a gathering place, a permanent association that they tell you you will carry through life. Some of their dads are also still members. So you think wow and try to join. They say you’ll need to prove yourself. You don’t want to back down of course.
So you go through a few trials and chores. And from that point on, every chore or trial they hit you with is an opportunity to quit, but then everything you put into the previous chores and trials will be wasted so you persist. And ultimately, when you are inducted to the group, you value that more because of what you suffered to get it. It turns out value goes both ways deep in the human mind: something gives you great pleasure, it’s valuable if it can keep doing that. Something you now possess cost you great pain to get, it must be valuable and you’d better hold onto it so you don’t need to go through that again.
And then it’s on to the sadism and power flexing of putting others through it, secure in the knowledge that it won’t harm them because you endured it.
This is just a weird human social phenomenon that pops up no matter how many times it is banned. How do you get someone to join a group and stay loyal? Put them through hell to get in. They’ll never want to invalidate that investment.
Well, almost never. I did have one friend in college who went through the entire ordeal of rushing a frat and then on the day they were inducting members, he stepped up to the podium to be named a member and told them all to go fuck themselves and walked out forever. But I think he was the exception.
Idk I was in a frat and it was mostly about volunteering and partying. No hazing that I was aware of. No pledging process. I ended up dropping because it felt a bit like paying for friends and I was broke. But many do really good work and are well meaning.
It shows they are willing to take abuse and follow orders without asking questions and not answer questions or reveal things to others. It lets employers and higher ups find people with those qualities which is part of why they fail upwards into management and administrative positions and end up in finance so frequently
Finance, government, law, business administration, etc.
Especially in the more elite institutions, these are the good ol’ boys clubs that funnel into positions of power.

There are so many ways you could backdoor ban them though. You could ban colleges from having official associations with them. You could take away their tax exempt status.
Those are probably the easiest before you get creative with new finance laws and other methods.

As for taxes that might be a bit more difficult. They kinda just fall into the category of social club which is a very encompassing tax exempt status.
