What got you banned?

I got perma-banned earlier this week. I make discord bots, was helping others out explaining some of the setups i use, a mod disliked that. Wasn’t against the rules. He banned me in a lot of places, I was trying to damage control due to how many I was being banned from, opening tickets and trying to at least figure out a fix or something and he painted it like I was stalking/ban evading, trying to find him IRL, from my own “business” account that was fully linked up to the website I had that was linked to my youtube/bots/bot building/game etc. Reddit took his side.

Means I also lost the subreddit and the users who were following updates.

End of the day, no matter how big the stuff gets, reddit is blacklisted and will remain that way indefinitely. They will never get business from me.

That sucks. I really miss the niche subs and due to content I still lurk, lemmy hasn’t gotten there yet.

I don’t know bots or backend stuff but been thinking a Reddit reply bot that can be hosted on Lem or elsewhere that allows anyone to use the bot to engage would be cool.

It would still clearly pander to that shit company but damn I really do miss certain communities

It was helpful for that for sure. 3d printing, TrueNAS, Bots, Python etc. But holy hell if you catch a mod on a bad day they can ruin years of progress. Its a shame it ended like that but its not the end of the world. Shit happens.

Plus… I dont miss the drama, everyone assuming your hostile when asking or talking about something.

You’re right, the angst and drama was too much a reminder of FB when I dropped it in 2020.

On the plus side it’s brought more folks to Lemmy and the niche/local communities can be built here.

I wasn’t banned, but I rolled over after 3rd party apps were taken away on the day they stopped working. I only use the app for it so taking that away made it pretty easy to stop and no i wasnt going to use their own because they forced my hand. Apps were limited on lemmy at that time and had to wait like 4 months before the one i used to use was released, but it was worth it.

Same. I was a Lurker+, reading a lot of content and discussion but only contributing and commenting to a few smaller / local subreddits.

Set up an RSS Feed for sports & my local subreddit (from old.reddit.com) and started using Lemmy in my browser. Now I use Boost. Haven’t logged back into reddit since.

      It works for my wants.

This is why I’m wary of the lemmy user base, a combination of individuals who have been banned from reddit and/or think they’re too good for reddit.

You do realize how easy it is to get banned from reddit, since the IPO dropped, yes?

I was there for 14 years and 50 weeks and got sniped within 30 seconds of dropping a post that was critical of Stephen Miller.

I got banned from Twitter after a decade and a dozen posts for calling out an insurrectionist three weeks before January 6th, using his own couched language of violence and corruption. (I grew up in the 1970’s and knew damn well what he was saying)

Going back even further, I got banned from the old ABC news forums in 2004 for pointing out that it was in fact, the unfair economic policies of the rich, that was the main reason that many women were starting to opt out of motherhood.

Some of us just got bumped for speaking uncomfortable truths about the consequences of unchecked power.

I consider it proof positive that I’ve been seeing things clearly for the last… oh… 45 years.

No clue - I had the good sense to leave well before the IPO.

a lot of people have been falsely banned, but a lot of other people, from what ive seen, have been banned for legitimate reasons

Lemmy users feel way more aggressive than reddit users (at least from my experience) even though most of them used to be reddit users

I feel the aggressiveness here often tempers in time. God knows the rage-bots on Reddit seemed to keep it all spun up on certain subs, esp. the political ones.

It’s nice not to have that constant “poking the bear” shit happening here…

I got banned in 2022 when I called out Russian fake news. Apparently to an admin and they took that personally. 12 year old account with no prior bans at all. Poof, just like that.

Yeah I feel better than that shit hole and so should you. Reddit isn’t for the people that made the site big anymore.

There’s certainly much, much more volatility here. Some people genuinely wrongfully banned; some… Less stable folks I think, “yeah you know what, you probably deserved the ban.”

its probably the ones that fall in with the tankies/conservatives, they kinda deserved it. things like reporting people, if the mod doesnt like it you “are overreoporting” ban. i also visit some of mod help sub, and they are glad these filters in place so they dont have to work to verify a justified ban.

Lemmy is very reminiscent of early Reddit and 4chan in certain ways.

I decided to be the change I wanted to see here instead.

Main user got eventually banned for liking a comment, i was on a last warning and subsequent alts got caught by machine algorithms detecting uncharacteristic behavior for a new user or some links to the original banned user, like device ID or browser ID. All alts got shadowbanned after first few comments.

After few weeks of trying different approaches i gave up and decided it’s more effort to try to bypass the detection algorithms than it’s worth to browse reddit.

oh yea they started targeting UPVOTES as bots, also any acitvity from an old accoun they will ban, even newly created accounts. and some subs do not like new accounts. they retroactive ban people to, which is a new thing. there was ways to evade it but its not worth it, since it requires to pay for things like new devices, a different ip, use of unique proxies that reddit doesnt detect immediately, and anti-detect browser which uses these proxies to create new instances of your browser(hence theoretically seperating the accounts from one another). these cost money though and it seems to geared towards people earning money through reddit(by directing traffic to thier own site).

plus they look at you fingerprinting on your browser, and device components too.

my last acct got shadowbanned, after they started AI banning people for very little reason. apparently crticism against trump is pretty bannable in places like r/tech. reddit has definitely upped thier sensitivity filters since then.

Basically the same for me. After they squashed the counter protests I decided “fuck them”.

20 year old account with probably 10k karma. Not much by today’s standards, but I gave it my best.

on reddit, its apparently makes your account more reliable as an actual user, so you wont get banned very easily. that is the theory, and does hold true to a certain point. reddit does detect/notice organic karma gain, and the ones that farm karma. and some subs require a certain amount of karma to engage in.

Mullvad. I kind of suspected that I’d get banned, since Mullvad is one of the most widely banned VPNs on mainstream platforms. I tried to appeal it several times, but no matter how I expressed myself, I never received any response whatsoever. I have kept an account just to be able to lurk, but I hate their (the company’s) guts. 🤣

13 years and like 800,000 points later, 790K of which was from comments, banned for saying that nazis deserve to be dead. Must have hit too close to home for the admins.

on r/tech said something about trump what he was doing. temp ban, then i started getting multiple notices of full bans on accounts i stopped using. and finally shadowbanned. they definitely were cleaning house on reddit last year. OF course this right after MUSK complained to spez like 2 times about subs criticizing him, and thats when the purges happened. remember that spez idolizes “loves” MUSK.

I was “harassing” a climate change denier by @ing them on climate change related news. The dude refused to block me and just kept getting annoyed once or twice a day instead. 10/10 would get banned for antagonizing someone too stupid to use the block button again.
