the federation. that no one single entity dominates it much. I know a bunch of people are going to list the large instances but they can by and large all be read by smaller instances and the fact there are several is better than one corpo owner. oh an that is gpl of course.
Yeah, I think people often assume that “good” federation means even user distribution. But the power of federation is that you can leave if you want to and no one can weaponize your social graph.
It’s a mixed bag. It scratches the news aggregator chat itch, but until it starts putting up per diem user traffic numbers in the millions rather than hundred thousand, I don’t get the same hit from knowing my posts are getting the same mainstream exposure. On the flipside, I usually get a better quality of response so I’m definitely jazzed about that.

The worst thing about nostr is that there is no fallback if your account private key is stolen.
That’s kind of an insoulable problem though. If the private key isn’t the single source of truth, then how do you define ownership?

I completely agree with this, and especially with comment sections. In reddit, even before the bots took over, every discussion was overrun really quickly, with a huge mass of people. If you failed to take part, in like an hour after posting, it did not matter if you commented, as it was either buried, or nobody else would comment as the post tanked. So it was just pointless to even write comments.
Here, I can still jump into comment sections, and manage to have a conversation, even if the post was made days ago.

The Piefed PWA customized with my own custom CSS. I stopped using apps for PieFed, the web app has all features and looks really nice with a little tweaking.
It is a federation of multiple instances with one goal in mind: to liberate human interaction from gamification and algorithm manipulation that makes you addicted to the platform, allowing them to brainwash you with targeted ads.
As for Lemmy/Piefed, the goal is to liberate and free human speech without profiting from it or being manipulated by algorithms and features like Reddit’s karma system.
I like that there are a variety of apps and services for different tastes and needs. On services, I like that Pixelfed and Loops exist to fill Instagram style niches for people even if it’s not my cup of tea. Jerboa is a no-frills Lemmy app and that’s how I want it, but I appreciate that there are many others with a plethora of features and styling choices that suit people, and are not forced to a single kind of experience.
Should’ve been more clear, but I know we all like the concept of the fediverse, I more meant specific apps or services, like if you enjoy using the front end alexandrite (not sure if thats still a thing) or are glad Mastodon added quote posts

I really liked using Apollo to browse Reddit back when it was good. Voyager fills that same void but with less noise than using Reddit at the end

I’ve seen more than enough bots here, and we know that only the tip of the iceberg is actually visible with things like this. Bots nowadays can pretend to be humans scarily well.
Reddit has significantly upvotes and comments on their content. It didn’t matter when I would post, my comments would usually get ignored and generally downvoted for no reason. When I post here I have way more interaction with people and their responses are unique.
I’m not saying there aren’t bots here. It just isn’t the same as Reddit.
That takes effort though. Reddit streamlines mass bot use by assigning those idiotic generated real-username69420 handles to everyone and banning posts that don’t follow a repetitive, prescribed behaviors.
Because the inflated activity helps them sell advertising space. What’s the incitive for botting here? You can Astroturf to handfull of Linux autists, some disenfranchised trans women, and a CCP social credit-building mill. Where’s the money in that.
Yes so much of the advantage of the fediverse is that it’s a thoughtful person on the other end of a post and not just content engineered for the most engagement
