honestly, given the choice between playing on Real Hardware on an LCD or through Wii virtual console on a CRT, i’d go for the latter almost every time. it’s hard to overstate just how much retrogaming on a CRT rules

There’s a bell curve. Consoles become hyper cheap a year or two after the Next Big Thing that replaces whatever it is comes out, and people start feeling like they can’t even give their old and busted machine away. Then some years after that nostalgia starts kicking in and the available supply of non-fucked examples is dwindling, so prices rocket into the stratosphere.

The Wii went through this but the poster child at the moment is the Gamecube. Gamestop was at one point (back when they still sold video game shit and not just Rick and Morty merch and meme stocks) selling complete refurbished Gamecubes for $20 USD. Complete with two controllers, IIRC, all the cables, cleaned, tested, ready to go. Bare Gamecubes are now going for $100-$200 on eBay which is absurd.

…I have like four of the damn things. I have at least two Wiis, possibly three, and a whole extra front loader NES sloshing around I’m not doing anything with above and beyond the one that’s hooked up in entertainment center. I keep telling myself this is part of my retirement fund.

I never could get into these. Love the music, and the art style, an especially the characters. But I found the level design and platforming too chaotic and nonsensical compared to Super Mario.

Really the only Genesis game I remember loving to actually play was Ecco the Dolphin.

They’re not really supposed to be played like Mario. Sonic is about getting through the level aa quick as you can without dying.

To be fair, the game doesn’t really reward you for doing that (besides the time bonus). But the levels are designed for it.

I had your same feeling on Sonic but with the time I started to enjoy its chaos, really an unique platform.

The main purpose of the sonic games was to show off how the 16 bit genesis could scroll faster than the 8 bit nes

      • Most platformers you just keep going to the right.

Sonic has you going left, up, down, and all around. Sometimes you hit dead ends. Sometimes you don’t even have much control over where you go (such as in the casino levels). It was frustrating.

I was at the casino level for hours trying to go past the tubes. What a dumb idea.

          • If the goal of Metroid was to get to the right most side of the map as fast as possible, I probably wouldn’t have liked it, assuming it used the same exact map.

(I also didn’t have it as a kid and only ever played it at Sears and Toys R Us if it was on the demo machine 🤷‍♂️)
