Interesting fact: CCTV is also the name of China’s state-run television network.
More interesting fact: back in about 2013 the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) announced on CCTV (China Central Television) that they had banned all English language acronyms like WHO (World Health Organization) and WTO (World Trade Organization) in favour of the full Chinese translation 世界卫生组织 (shì jiè wèi shēng zǔ zhī) and 世界贸易组织 (shì jiè mào yì zǔ zhī).
There were fines for organizations who flouted the law.
Yeah, Western broadcasters should instead use Chinese characters and not do any translations when covering China.
I am very smart.
I don’t know whether this is true, but it’s not a bad idea for a style guide, but imposing a fine is very heavy-handed. Chinese people speak Chinese and their names in Chinese describe what the organisation does, whereas the English acronyms are just meaningless symbols.
At the time China had just had a ruling go against them in one of those big international bodies, which I assume prompted the announcement.
No effort seemed to be made to actually phase out English acronyms, my Chinese friends (I was living in Hebei at the time) said that was just a government temper tantrum that would soon be forgotten.
Intentionally make advert you know will get blocked from airing on TV and then refuse to make the suggested edits. Make a whole load of new adverts to manufacture fake controversy about your original advert. Profit?
I am no fan of the OSA, and I like Mullvad and have used their services, but knocking out a piece of complete AI slop with the intent of being able to spin months of advertising masquerading as journalism is pretty cynical behaviour.
Yeah even the reasons mullvard put on their own site seen very reasonable objections.

The overall concept lacks clarity.”
-
“It is unclear why certain examples are included, who the ‘speaker’ represents, and the role of individuals depicted in the car.”
-
“Several examples (e.g., paedophiles, rapists, murderers) risk causing serious offence and could imply that the VPN facilitates criminal activity.”
-
“Referencing topics such as: Paedophiles, Rapists, Murderers, Enemies of the state, Journalists, Refugees, Controversial opinions, People’s bedrooms, Police officers, Children’s headsets … is inappropriate and irrelevant to the average consumer’s experience with a VPN.”
I think they made the video to expose the dangers of surveillance and then turned parts into ads.

I’d be keen to smash the fucking camera.
I wouldn’t be surprised if all envelopes to/from mull were being inspected and recorded
Wouldn’t they be encrypted?
I think they mean physical mail envelopes. Iirc you can send mullvad cash via mail to pay for the VPN if you want
Doesn’t really matter if I’m sending cash and don’t have a return address right?
I guess they give you the 16-digit ID before you send the cash? Otherwise you’d need to include something to match the cash to your account, right? Otherwise they would just be getting blank envelopes full of cash.
I get that it’s an ad with a good message, but this is absolutely still just straight up posting an ad
Aye, but perhaps an exception should be given for the resistance against the erosion of personal liberties and a free internet?
If you make an exception for that, why not for any other important cause? And then you just have a news community with weird rules about the format of posts
Is it an advertisement trying to get you to buy something, or is it a public service announcement with no intent to sell you something?
If the EFF bought up ad-space to push PSAs about net neutrality and garner support and person action, would you be miffed? I wouldn’t, because that’s not really an “advertisement” .
Edit: Yes, I know VPN behind this has a profit motive. But sometimes businesses stand up and advocate for personal action for the betterment of all. Just like Pornhub in states & countries that are requiring ID verifications are redirected to a page advocating for personal action for your rights instead of complying with a security nightmare.
So we can post ads to this community?
Edit: Rule 8 says no
I’m out of the loop. Can someone ELIi’manidiot.
