This is @Dave@lemmy.nz and @Dave@piefed.nz but PieFed told me not to use my admin account for general browsing so here I am following instructions.

  • Nor are Linux users conditioned to download programs from random sketchy sources the way Windows users do.

I think about this every time install instructions for something are “run this terminal command to add our repo to your sources”. Would probably be pretty easy to get an auto-updating attack path for the unsuspecting. The first drop doesn’t even need to be malicious, just ship the virus as an update.

  • The two main benefits I’ve seen of private trackers are that you avoid the issue in the OP which happens all the time on public trackers, and that shows download in seconds.

Not sure how helpful they would be if things weren’t automated. I just have things set up so my Jellyfin users can request shows and they get downloaded automatically.

But with that said, “private” doesn’t mean it costs money, just that it requires an account (and usually that is an application process). It means they can kick people off for uploading things they shouldn’t.

I prefer that thing where someone sends you an invite for a month from now, and sends you a separate email with the important documents in it. At least the stuff in the calendar invite can be found from the calendar, that email you sent a month ago is not tied to the meeting in any way.
