I got rid of Google easily. Unfortunately, I still have to use their Messages app for Rcs, and Youtube. But replaced all the other products.

Brother, using an open-source (free) messenger is good. Using proprietary, closed-source is bad. I deleted Whatsapp 1 year and a half ago. Told people they can find me on Signal or normal RCS/SMS messaging. Some came to Signal, the majority started contacting me on rcs/sms. However, now we can talk to Whatsapp people from an European messenger (Arnacon). Unlike BirdyChat and Haiket, it doesn’t require to be downloaded only from Google Store. And I prefer it to Google-Google Messages.

Of course. Mac OS users will tell that you are so poor/stingy to buy an Apple computer, and Windows users to buy a Windows license. I left Windows, Reddit, X and Whatsapp 3 years ago. Switched to GNU/Linux, Lemmy, Mastodon and Signal/XMPP/SimpleX/DeltaChat. Best tech decisions I made. I hope more people will join Free/Federated technology. :-)

People have strange and strong brand loyalty for proprietary things. It’s like a culture for them. I have seen it especially on iPhone and Whatsapp. Not only they refuse to use alternatives (Android; RCS/Signal/XMPP etc.). They will think you are a loser if you don’t use them. Or, even worse, will try to convince you to use them and that those are the best and anything else is a shit. I believe it’s the same for social media. So good luck!

Using non-free (proprietary) software and believing we are free to do anything we want with the software. But we can do only what the app (the devs) let us to do. We can’t see or edit the code of program to run as we wish.
