The focus on golf clubs tells me exactly the type of person this is. Also, my bike will transport my wife and clubs for a lot longer than 30 minutes on cheap Ramen lunch.

That is If I had golf clubs…

    Or a bike…

And my wife may have left me…

    Now I’m hungry for noodles.

Technically he isn’t wrong, but not for the reasons he thinks. Gas prices are subsidized significantly. And if they weren’t, people sure wouldn’t drive as much. Unsubsidized it would be between 10 and 15 per gallon. So if 2 to 4 is double, that would mean it would now be 20 to 30. So like a dollar a mile in his math.

Pavement princess pickup trucks. Shiny, chrome, pristine, comically huge trucks that never see any work or recreation and aren’t ever intended to. The “all hat no cattle” of vehicles.

I’m confused by comments like this because my Hyundai Elantra gets 7-8L/100km, which according to internet calculators is 30mpg

maybe I’m just thrown off by the cursedness of the MPG unit and how much the difference is between 25-30 and 30-35

I wish I could get something like that, but the market just doesn’t have it

best I’ve managed was 5.5 in a Toyota Tercel. the successor (Yaris) is comparable to the Elantra, at 7-8

DMT is IMO not a “recreational” drug. The few times I’ve done it, it was a shitload of mental and emotional work to keep up with. Definitely alternate realities though – LSD lets you wander into otherworldly thoughts; Psilocybin lets you visualize them vividly; DMT slams them into your sensory apparatus like a brick wrapped in lemon

Truly spoken like someone with too much disposable.

More and more people can’t afford the wine or the fancy coffee, or the gasoline to get to the fancy restaurant, or the time to eat out after working their two jobs, or the 4000-lb SUV to pour the gasoline into, because they need their old banger and the gasoline to haul their ass to work to earn enough to pay rent, utilities and a bit more gasoline to stay on the hamster wheel the next week - week after week.

This. And the other consideration they aren’t factoring in is that the cost of gasoline makes everything else more expensive, too.

Based on what I know of wine, a $9/glass varietal is on the lower end of quality today, but that was about average a few years ago. My recollection is that a cheap wine would have gone for $5/glass in 2010. The Two Buck Chuck that we bought by the case in college now costs almost $5.

The wine hasn’t gotten any better. But it costs more to move that wine by truck to the store, so the price goes up. It costs more to manufacture the bottles and power the equipment they use to process the grapes. It costs more to harvest and transport the grapes in the first place. It’s a chain of price increases down the line that all add up with the cost of gas.

Wages haven’t meaningfully increased at a comparable rate either. Even if you’re earning a bit more now on paper than you were 5-10 years ago, everyone’s purchasing power has dropped significantly. Even if prices of certain goods haven’t gone up that much, I have to think a lot more about my spending today than I used to.

Diminishing returns on wine. Have too much and you’ll piss yourself at the table effectively raising the price per km traveled to infinity.

Petrol is super cheap, because the only thing you can really do with it is burn it for energy.

That and you waste 60-90 percent of that energy potential as heat.

That is exactly what we are doing in the upper end of that efficiency range (turbochargers, turbine generators, heater cores) - the waste heat from that is unharvestable (exhaust gas, engine core heat).

By that logic, the most cost-effective fuel would be a little baggie of shrooms.

For less than $10, it will transport him 20-light-years to another realm of existence, where he can have afternoon tea and crumpets with a friendly Narwhal named Gershwin, lounging under a rainbow.
