Only seasons 1,2 and 5 of your favorite show are available on Streaming Service 1. Only seasons 3 and 4 are available on Streaming Service 2. Why is this happening?
Both streaming services are owned by the same corporation and this setup lets them double-dip you on subscription fees.

Libraries have online methods to loan movies, audiobooks, books, and games nowadays.
There are people outside of the US who can just ride the bike or use public transport.

Why does anyone bother with streaming services when you can buy DVDs cheaper and own the media forever and the collection only accumulates over time? Kodi is awesome.
I don’t rewatch much. A collection of discs just takes up space and collects dust.
I mean one requires a few clicks, the other requires effort, time and more steps.
I also don’t rewatch stuff frequently, there’s no point in keeping it after other than taking up space or data.
DVDs don’t last forever. I have a ton of dvds that are no longer good. Is actually so bad there are people trying to find still working copies of shows from the 90’s so they can digitize them before they are lost forever.
This is why I went through and ripped all of mine. As soon as the second one died I went full “Fuck this, I’m backing them up.”
Jellyfin and offline streaming was just an extra bonus.

If it helps, you can get kits to polish CDs and DVDs in case they’re too scratched up.

I think it can happen a couple different ways.
The price of one dvd is more than a month of streaming. So I guess this works if you only watch one movie a month, or one season of a series every six months.

Also, depending on how you define a “recent” movie. You can get them for as little as $0.25 or as much as $300. Heck the most expensive movie that my husband bought was old not new.
The movie you shared is 13$ on Walmart’s website. Regardless, you’re talking about reducing the choice by a lot to stay under a fixed budget, not really the same as having access to a whole database and recent movies/series. All that goes out the window for series anyways, those are usually stupid expensive.
More power to you though. Personally, I would rip the CDs and put them on a hardrive with jellyfin just out of convenience.
The other aspect of this, for me, is that streaming is high definition and I have functional eyeballs.
Even the most highly compressed HD content that’s been served up to me is orders of magnitude better looking than low-def DVD potato quality video. So at a minimum, if it were going to be a remotely accurate comparison between paid physical versus paid streaming, DVD shouldn’t even be in the discussion for many/most of us.

Yeah, while I agree with many points people make about physical media I rarely re-watch movies/shows and re-play games. I do everything I can to lessen the environmental impact I have, and a plastic disc with some other stuff from who knows where transported to me for mostly one time use goes very much against that. And yes, companies are the biggest criminals when it comes to humanity’s destruction of the climate but they couldn’t do that if no one was giving them money. So I do and tell others to stop doing that, to make intelligent and researched choices in everything they do.
And we’re right back to cable TV.
A half dozen “packages” as streaming services, nothing good on, prices keep going up, and anything you do want to see costs more (pay-per-view).

My partner and I cycle. We have 1 or 2 services at a time, burn them out, and move on.

I don’t even need hard copies, just give me the ability to buy a DRMless file I can run on any of my devices for a fair price. I don’t even necessarily need to be able to download it again in the future if that makes it cheaper. I can back my shit up myself.

Kind of. But when Amazon has the option to rent a movie for $3, and all I have to do is click that button and it will stream instantly, I still NEVER click that button. It’s not really a service issue, because it’s available instantly at just the click of a button.
It’s more of a principal issue. Like why the fuck am I paying all this money for all these streaming services and you still want to charge me even more? Makes piracy an easy choice.

If you’ve heard of plex, it’s that but you don’t have to pay money to access your own content.
If you haven’t, it’s a media server and client program that organizes your backups of dvds and definitely nothing else

Yes and no. You could, in theory, put it behind a reverse proxy, but you shouldn’t without further security measures.
You could put your server in a tailnet (tailscale, there are FOSS alternatives, but those are more difficult to set up), which is extremely, easy to configure, and allows every device in it (smartphones, tablets, computers…) to access your media server.
Upvote for Tailscale. I don’t use it for media streaming but my frigate server with my pet cams is on there. Really great for a free service.
The only cost is of obtaining the media you wish to stream, using whatever method you wish to aquire it.

That being said the original meme on here did actually affect me last night. I really wanted to watch Quentin Tarantino’s grindhouse and apparently it’s unavailable on all streaming services but I could rent it for $3.99. really didn’t want to so I chose not to and watch something else instead.

I wanted to watch the 1939 movie the wizard of oz and in my country is not available on any of the streaming subscriptions. Can be only rented for 24 hours like it’s some fresh movie out of the theater
