Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How would you reorganize the ways we interact with the internet to make the world a better place?English
0·9 days agoI’d immediately outlaw the buying or selling of goods and services. The internet should be a free repository of knowledge and a communication platform. Not a marketplace.

78·12 days agoIt’s very simple. We’ll get rid of the pride flags as soon as they get rid of all the crosses. Fair is fair, after all.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is the best email server you use?English
0·24 days agoPosteo is ridiculously cheap, secure (e2e encryption and the whole works) and just all-around great. Been using it for years without a single issue.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's a NON-HORROR NON-DOCUMENTARY movie that disturbed you or made you very uncomfortable?English
0·24 days agoI found some scenes from the movie ‘Amistad’ (1997) deeply disturbing, and they haunt me to this day (as they should any sane human being).

0·1 month ago30 years? It’s happening now. A significant portion of the homeless people that exist in this country are senior citizens who are too old to work and cannot afford housing. There are programs that are able to help some of them, but not all.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you think every generation thinks their time growing up was the best?English
0·1 month agoTo be honest, every decade has its share of ‘greatness’ and ‘terribleness’. Every generation has its heroes and villains. Sure, there weren’t kids on cellphones back in the 80’s but your kid would most likely be murdered if they came out as gay in high school. Yes, people weren’t digital shut-ins back in the 70’s, but cops were beating the living shit out of black people on the streets.
It’s all relative. There never was a ‘golden age’. That’s not to say we shouldn’t fight to make things better wherever and whenever we can, though.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What commonly given advice is actually wrong or toxic?English
0·1 month ago“If you don’t profit from it, someone else will, so you might as well get yours.”
Don’t even get me started on how toxic and self-centered this is…

0·1 month agoFluxer appears to be the most promising, though it is still very new and they are working furiously to get it up to par with a tiny dev team that consists of two (three?) people. Most basic features are quite usable now, though.

0·1 month agoAs I replied to another comment, this tech has been implemented since 1974. All the pearl-clutching about location tracking is closing the barn door after the cows have already gotten out.

0·1 month ago(It uses GPS. At a minimum it would lay the groundwork for location tracking of every new vehicle sold. Nevermind any consequences that are actually unforeseeable.)
Location tracking of vehicles has been around since 1974. This is nothing new. Your car has this tech, and it is utilized by your government.

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•New York officials want speed-limiting devices installed in the cars of drivers who get more than 16 speeding tickets in a yearEnglish
0·1 month agoHonestly, why? I can’t think of a compelling reason (beyond being impatient and wanting to break the law) why a normal citizen would need to be able to exceed the speed limit. There’s just no justification that I can see. I don’t mind the downvotes, but please someone give me a logical reason why cars should be able to drive in excess of 75mph.

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•New York officials want speed-limiting devices installed in the cars of drivers who get more than 16 speeding tickets in a yearEnglish
0·1 month agoBetter yet, put them in everyone’s car and set them so NO ONE (except law enforcement and emergency services) can go beyond five miles over the posted speed limit. Problem solved.
I mean, it’s not like we don’t have the technology to make this happen, folks…

Please allow me to clarify - I’m not talking about people who help and share with each other as the regular course of a friendship. That’s perfectly normal and should be encouraged - that’s how community is supposed to work. What I’m talking about are the people who are like…um…well, professional ‘gold-diggers’, if you will. Their ONLY interest lies in what they can get out of you. ‘Users’ might be a better term, I guess.
