There’s probably diving in your local area. You’d be surprised, but almost everywhere has at least a few good diving spots. Quarries and lakes are common dive spots
I do a lot of diving in the midwest. Water is cold, but otherwise it’s got some good diving. Ship wrecks are especially cool since cold, fresh water will preserve them for an extremely long time. Once you get drysuit certified, the cold water isn’t much of an issue too
It’s really cool how friendly and curious most life is underwater, and being able to move in 3 dimensions will always be amazing to me
It’s not as hard to get into as you’d expect. Right now** is a great time to get into it. There are a lot of instructors right now trying to build hours waiting for the airlines to hire again. You can find higher quality instructors for cheaper than normal
My instructor works for free. He’s just glad to be getting free flight hours. I wouldn’t recommend doing a formal flight school unless you have money to burn. If you’re good at self-study, get Sporty’s or another online course. Few hundred dollars for the ground school. Then rent a plane to do your hours in
**Huge asterisk here due to gas prices being elevated. It’s not too hard to find cheap 100LL/UL, but that window is closing. As long as the war in Iran is ongoing, higher fuel prices will be a concern. That being said, my Cherokee gets 16-20 MPG equivalent

News@lemmy.world•‘Trans People Are a Myth’: Idaho Republicans Pass Extreme Bathroom Ban Carrying 5-Year Prison Sentence
14·19 days agoReading through the bill, they use the term “biological sex” without defining it
What amateurs are writing these laws? Not even defining terms? I get the vagueness of it is the point, but there are a lot of edge cases that will be in limbo from this

Russian politicians claim the same thing about gays. I believe it was in Chechnya

News@lemmy.world•Americans are pulling money out of their 401(k) funds at record rates
22·20 days agoBecause that was the deal to be allowed to invest that money without paying taxes
The goal, at a societal level, is the incentivize keeping it in a retirement fund
You can always pay yaxes and invest the money in a brokerage account if you don’t want to risk penalties
I had a similar account that got banned for connecting to the wrong VPN endpoint. Clicked a random server from my VPN provider, suddenly my account was permanently banned with no ability to appeal
Thinking it was just some issue on my end (it was a non-standard looking ban), I logged into another OG account of mine, which also promptly got perma-banned
Extreme incompetence for them to be issuing perma-bans like that based on IP address
They made it easier for bots to thrive by allowing hidden post histories, limiting the API, and punishing users for “bad” reports, but claim they need face ID to filter out bots?
You could have read the article instead of being insulting to a recently deceased man:
He “passed away peacefully after a long battle with cancer,” OnlyFans confirmed in a statement, which asked for privacy for his family.

Math comes very easily and naturally to me. Even advanced calculus felt east to learn
I couldn’t sing a single song from memory. Not in a, “I’m bad at singing” way. Literally I don’t remember a single song. I have memorized songs before, but it’s quick to forget them, because it’s just that to me - memorization
With practice and effort I can memorize songs and generally replicate patterns to make music, but that’s it. It isn’t really learning music
Proton let me delete the payment information between charges, but they certainly made it a painful process. I had to email support
Corn syrup is better than our other main use for it: Ethanol
Problem is that we have such extreme subsidies that vast swaths of farmers are now entirely reliant on corn subsidies. We make far more corn than we have any use for because of it
No politician wants to be the one to take away the insane corn subsidies because a whole lot of farmers will be upset, and the American public is generally unaware of how wasteful the subsidies are

The only reason I can think to delete it is because big corporate advertisers didn’t like it

4·2 months agoJudges do have public contact information (here is this judge’s: https://www.wvsd.uscourts.gov/judges-info/district-court-judges/joseph-r-goodwin), but judges are not public representatives. They don’t (directly) answer to the people. There are also a lot of laws protecting the judicial process

News@lemmy.world•Judge gives 'explicit notice' that illegal ICE detentions will result in contempt and sanctions
5·2 months agoThey’re not doing anything. They’re merely saying they could do something in the future
Don’t listen to what people say, watch what they do
If the judges handing out these warnings agreed with the illegal detentions, but didn’t want to explicitly break the law themselves, what would they do differently? I don’t think anything. If they wanted these illegal detentions to happen, while still covering their own ass, they’d do exactly this: Drag their feet on doing any action, while verbally condemning the government breaking the law

Not fun fact: That’s how I became lactose intolerant
