Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What do you think is the modern day equivalent to asbestos in 1960?
0·17 days agoMostly feeling the vibes given the recent Australian report linking nicotine vapes to cancer and the anecdotal evidence I have for these strong vapes causing all sorts of negative mental outcomes or dependency for people I know who use them heavily. We still have a lot of space to learn about unintended consequences here and I’m pessimistic.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How many Lemmy users post regularly (let's say daily)?

Realistically I think if humanity decided altogether to go for the genocide ending to life on earth we’d be able to kill all life on earth. We can’t directly kill all of the bacteria but if we were dogged enough we could induce the Venus ending (we will long be dead before victory is claimed though).

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do people hate each other more each passing day, or is it just hate getting more and more blatant with internet?
0·1 month agoSurely there are a lot of bitter people on the Internet. My opinion is that it doesn’t matter if you’re right and they’re wrong, hating them only hurts you while they dgaf, if anything it just makes them stronger. Don’t engage the hater, love on.

Fun fact: Orinoco Flow is actually about the movement of silt and sediment in river systems and its wide ranging impacts once reaching the open ocean.
You’re maybe thinking of Cassandra from the Trojan war/Oresteia.

0·2 months agoI forgot about this game, was pretty neat. A good way to learn about all the cars they made. If you find it in a PS1 game bargain bin somewhere check it out.
Took the dogs to the vet the other day to get their shots, and the friggin rabies tags were Texas-shaped. Ugly!

Science Memes@mander.xyz•The sun is a deadly laser...English
0·2 months agoThis is not completely correct though. It is our atmosphere/albedo/geological and natural processes that help maintain consistently livable temperatures, not just living in the habitable zone. No atmosphere? We’d be like the Moon, where it is too hot in sunlight and too cold in shade despite being similarly far from the sun as Earth.

There isn’t a universal answer, I expect it depends a lot on your worldview and whether you got past your hangups earlier in life, and what your health, regrets and living situation are. I have anecdotal evidence both ways.
