Argentina (Messi) moment
Idk I don’t watch soccer (futbol 🤓)
You’ve got it completely right. This was practically the world cup final between Argentina and Spain. It’s mind boggling how much blatant shoving and pulling the Argentinian team got away with before one of the players finally got expelled from the game.
What’s mind boggling is how easy it is to manipulate large numbers of people to believe things that literally oppose what they’re seeing with their own eyes. Also how people that clearly never (or barely) watched any football at all in their entire lives are now experts in the matter.
There was some kind of campaign against not only argentina but south american teams in general. Futbol is a physical, contact permitted sport. Literally a part of the rules. When European teams have large capable players using their force it gets lauded as athletic and a wonderful display of physicality.
When south american teams do it they’re called dirty and cheaters.
Borderline racist to be honest.
Did the Argentinian players behave like idiots post Spain loss? Yeah, paredes and molina were idiots. Does any coverage of the Spanish player instigations get news coverage? Fat chance, even though fifa reviews also found them at fault and they too were penalized. Gavi even came out on record to say paredes shouldn’t have been penalized. I don’t agree but it demonstrates an understanding that the game gets heated and altercations like this can happen. The reporting and narrative though is wild.
100% agree.
As far as I remember, this is not World Cup exclusive, this happens with anything else that get famous. Like when some artist become famous because of some TikTok posts and then suddenly people start saying that they’ve been listening to that famous since day one?
If you’ve never seen the opening scene to The Last Boyscout (1991).
Favorite comment:
The only realistic thing about this scene is that the Cleveland team loses again.
The other one:
It would only have been a 3 game suspension if he hadn’t killed himself.
The “steal” thing is by far the worst part.
The gun thing is clear hyper-hyperbole, but calling a football (as opposed to handegg) tackle a “steal” is just ignorance combined with an arrogant assumption that other sports all use US sportball terminology 🤦🏻
Pretty sure football bans the use of firearms.
Clearly this is murican soccer.
Pretty sure football bans the use of firearms.
Big if true.
I mean soccer is from the British so blame them for why we call it that. But it’s really not even that big of a deal since both sports are ___ football. American football is Gridiron football, and the other is Association football, both got shortened to just football which makes it confusing.
I mean soccer is from the British so blame them for why we call it that
No. The British haven’t called it that since the 1800s.
If you’re going to call everything what the British called it in the 1800s, anti racist advocacy groups are going to be BUSY.
But it’s really not even that big of a deal since both sports are ___ football
Wrong again.
One sport consists mainly of kicking a ball shaped object with your feet until the other team takes the ball via foot on ball action.
The other consists mainly of carrying a vaguely egg shaped object in your hands until the other team stops you enough times via sweaty man on man action.
American football
iswas Gridiron football, and the otheriswas Association footballFixed it for you.
This is the most tired bullshit argument. If you want to hate Americans just say “I hate Americans” and move on. Do you similarly attack Aussies for their football?
The word “football” is typically used to refer to the most popular style of football in an area. In the US that’s American football. In Australia that’s Aussie rules football. Other less common forms of football (in a given area) usually get another word to distinguish them, like rugby or soccer. All of these sports are under the umbrella of football whether you like it or not, and claiming they’re not is just plain ignorant of what the word football means.
It’s also deeply funny that you claim the word soccer wasn’t British by… admitting that the word soccer is British. Lol.
If you want to hate Americans just say “I hate Americans” and move on.
I don’t, though. That’s a bizarre strawman.
Do you similarly attack Aussies for their football?
At least they call theirs “Aussie Rules Football” and don’t insist on misnaming the real thing.
The word “football” is typically used to refer to the most popular style of football in an area
Nope. That’s just wrong. There’s what the US calls football (handegg), there’s the Aussie Rules weirdness, and then there’s what literally every other nation on the planet calls football.
You’re acting like the outliers are the norm and it’s silly.
All of these sports are under the umbrella of football whether you like it or not, and claiming they’re not is just plain ignorant of what the word football means.
Nope. Pretty damn ironic to claim with a straight face that it’s ignorance to not consider the exception the norm.
you claim the word soccer wasn’t British
Another strawman. I never said anything of the sort.
I said that the term hasn’t been used in the UK for centuries, which is what’s relevant to your “blame the British” argument.
You still don’t understand what “football” is. Association football is the most popular in the world, so in regions where it’s the most popular they call it “football” and other forms by other names. In regions where other games of football are more popular they call those sports “football” and call other forms by other names (e.g., soccer).
You being completely ignorant of the history and current landscape of all football sports does not mean it is incorrect to call any other form of football “football.”
Other points:
- Much of the Anglosphere, including Australia, call association football “soccer.” It is very much not just the US.
- Being okay with “Aussie rules football” but not “American football” is patently absurd and betrays that:
- It was not a strawman it was a clearly accurate insight into your position that you just wanted to be anti-American, your reply here is also dripping with it.
- I’m not saying outliers are the norm. I’m saying everywhere calls the most popular form of football in that area simply “football”
- Your obsession with ball shape similarly betrays your ignorance of football since there are many forms of football that use more oval shaped balls.
- Also it wasn’t a strawman when someone said the word came from the British you replied with “no.”
You still don’t understand what “football” is
I understand perfectly. I just don’t agree with your ridiculously loose definition.
You being completely ignorant of the history and current landscape of all football sports
Again, disagreement of definition ≠ ignorance.
I know about some places misnaming other sports as football. That I consider it incorrect from a standpoint of etymology and worldwide common usage isn’t ignorance.
Much of the Anglosphere, includingAustralia, call association football “soccer.” It is very much not just the US.Name one other country that misnames it soccer. Should be easy, given your argument that having regional differences in what you call football is the norm rather than the exception.
Being okay with “Aussie rules football” but not “American football”
Again, I didn’t say that I consider calling “Aussie Rules Football” football correct. I don’t.
At least they (sometimes) specify the “Aussie Rules” part, rather than just take over the term with no qualification like the US. Which makes it less egregious but still incorrect.
is patently absurd
Which is why I never claimed any such thing. Please retire that stupid strawman.
It was not a strawman it was a clearly accurate insight into your position that you just wanted to be anti-American, your reply here is also dripping with it

I’m not saying outliers are the norm
You literally are.
I’m saying everywhere calls the most popular form of football in that area simply “football”
By which you mean that the US and Australia are as representative as the rest of the world.
That’s the definition of treating outliers as the norm.
Your obsession with ball shape similarly betrays your ignorance of football
Nah,the fact that a ball is definitionally a round object is just low hanging fruit that makes it easy to point out the absurdity of your argument.
That I care about words having clear meanings is not “obsession” or “ignorance”, it’s definitional rigor.
there are many forms of football that use more oval shaped balls
Nope. There’s TWO sports erroneously CALLED football by the locals in spite of being hand based and featuring an oval object.
when someone said the word came from the British you replied with “no.”
I did no such thing.
I accurately pointed out that it hasn’t been called soccer in the UK for centuries, pointing out that 1800s definitions are not valid arguments for misnaming things in the 21st century.
At no point did I deny the fact that the British term for it used to be soccer. I just pointed out that it’s not a valid argument since it’s irrelevant.
Walk away and quit arguing.
OH MY GOD WHO THE HELL CARES
What a stupid fucking hill to die on.
Just absolutely riddled with even more easily searchable falsehoods, lol.
Next you’ll be telling us that pickle ball doesn’t involve any pickles.
You are correct, I wrote it as “steal” on purpose, because I am arrogant and I like to arrogantly impose my American vocabulary on British and other English speaking non-American people.
You read it once, now you’ll be forced to say “steal” for the rest of your life. This is my master plan.handegg
Shut uuuuuuuuuuuuup. This is insufferable.
If ICE played soccer
Thats def a red card on the blue guy.
And no goals are scored… seems accurate.
