Like everyone else is saying, find a way to participate. I’m absolutely awful at posting, but I can comment regularly so I do that a lot. If you notice anything you want missing it’s gonna be up to you to inspire others by posting about it and being actively involved in other posts about it.
Oh also a lot of folks on here suck to varying degrees. Not all are necessarily ban worthy, but some will be. There are instances you may choose to block as well. In general you make of this place what you put in. And for all the users you dislike and see around you’ll get plenty that you see around and like, and it’s cool when you notice you keep interacting with the same people in positive ways

The main difference is that subreddits are called “communities” or “comms” for short, not sublemmys like you would expect.

Instances are like ideologic factions here in some cases. Particularly .ml. Keep an eye on the instance associated with people’s usernames. Typically gives you perspective on the way they may act.
Browse /all/new or hot and just block communities youre not interested in rather than try to build a homepage with subscriptions. Subscribe all you like ofc but your Frontpage will be more interesting this way.
yeah, the fact you have to do this though is one of the major flaws of this place.
you should be able to subscribe to stuff you like, but there isn’t enough content to go that route, and most of the prolific content is all weird stuff you want to block…
I everything else is stuff you block, why are you bothering with it?
I picked everything I am interested in and never go to all, I have no interest in a frontpage that is everyone elses.
So no need to block anything.
Because if you want to see anything outside of your constructed bubble, you will have to add it intentionally. There are plenty of communities i wouldn’t know about because I’m new. By using all or popular, i can stumble upon things from time to time.
Everything’s made up and the points don’t matter.

Well, you’ve already chosen an instance to sign up with and start posting, so the confusing part is done.
Sometimes stuff from the wider network will be missing or inaccessible due to federation issues, but don’t worry too much about it.
First order of business is to curate a decent feed. Try searching for communities that you’re interested in. Browse the All feed and subscribe to interesting communities, generously block the ones you don’t want to see. Check !communitypromo@lemmy.ca (and its pinned thread) and !newcommunities@lemmy.world for cool ones to join.
One thing to be aware of is there are many duplicate communities across instances. Check them out, subscribe to each or pick the most active one - or the one on your least disliked instance. On that note, know that some instances are often considered politically extreme or problematic.
Think of it as every sub being is own little micro site connected with most of the other micro site. Find a micro site that align with your beliefs, make an account on it and go have fun
Basic internet decency is appreciated
If someone asks which linux distro they should install, just insist on your favourite distro no matter the use case.
Well fortunately Debian is the right answer for every use case, so problem solved there!

It’s basically reddit. If you want to find communities (subreddits) you can search for them on your instance (the server you’re on, in your case it’s Lemmy.world), or look on lemmyverse.net. You’re on a more populated instance, so discovery will be less of an issue for you.
Its a bit quieter here all there is more need to post things you are interested in and start threads for discussions you want.

This is probably the biggest key to someone coming from Reddit. I feel one really gets out of this platform what they put into it. There’s a good number of people here, but it’s not enough you can just sit there quietly and be served endless content. If you engage with fellow users, most will gladly respond.
I consider myself moderately shy and quiet, but people here are very fun and supportive, and last I looked I was somewhere in the top 30 posters/commenters and I look forward to talking with the people here every day. I can honestly say Lemmy has made me a better person in a number of ways thanks to what a great group of people we have if one chooses to take advantage of that.
I can’t say that I thoroughly read every one, but I always appreciate your owl and wildlife posts. I’ve learned much more about owls than I ever considered I would. I even donated some old phones to an owl research organization thanks to one of your posts from a couple years ago. So you’re doing the lord’s work (yes, the monotheistic god is an owl. Surprise!).
I started off here 3 years ago with what I’d say is an average interest in a specific wild animal. When everyone came over in the big Reddit API wave, a few people were contributing, and I had a few owl photos I could share. After a month or so, the other contributions dried up, and I didn’t want to see such a fun group stagnate and die, so I figured I’d step up.
I’ve always enjoyed seeing animals when I travel, so I know they are out there, but sometimes owls are a little hard to come by, so one of the first things I did to keep posting regularly was my 50 States of Owls series, where I went through the US from A to Z showing a place one could go visit an owl.
As I kept reading and researching, I started to realize how many awesome things there were about both owl and the humans that try to keep them safe. That got me to really keep learning on my own and just sharing my journey with you guys.
After about 2 years of doing this, reading wasn’t enough. There was too much I wanted to see or experience in person, so I volunteered at a wildlife rescue. We’re suburban, so we don’t get a ton of owls, but we do get some. We service around 5000 animals a year though of nearly all our local species, and getting to know them, they are all fairly equally wonderful. I see so many miracles of nature and during a dark period for my country, I get to spend time surrounded by the most loving and caring people I’ve ever gotten to know. The work is hot, and smelly, we get scratched and bit and sprayed by skunks, but it’s also the most rewarding work I’ve done in my life. I feel I’m saving important lives and making my community a better place. I feed babies smaller than my pinky. I have wild animals fall asleep in my arms after a good meal. I get to set huge raptors loose to regain their freedom after months of care.
I never thought something like this could be real, and you guys giving me your eyes and support as I’ve shared this journey with all of you is what made it happen. I’m truly grateful to Lemmy and all of you that crack jokes with me, ask me questions, tell me you love what I share, or just lurk in the background sending upvotes of support.
I’m happy you got to participate donating those phones! I remember that project. Accomplishing things like that here and getting a few of you to volunteer at your local rescues (I’ve been working hard on ickplant!) really feels like we’re making a positive difference.
So many people reach out and say that the owls or my energy bring them a lot of positive moments to look forward to, and that makes me happy too, see you all find beauty in the natural world and excited to learn along with me. Reddit deciding to not be cool anymore has been such a big lifechanger!
