I hate this view, it’s not true, at all. The majority of great musicians are normal people. This is a concept people made up to justify liking shitty people. I’ve personally interacted with a ton of my favorite bands and outside of a few assholes they are all cool normal people. Music is a rational thing, there are formulas for what does and does not work, you don’t need to be insane to do cool and innovative shit with music. If you look at most of the people that were insane they burned out, died, or ended up in obscurity. They’re also usually credit stealing narcissists, like Jim Morrisson, they don’t actually provide anything to the music other than a face and personality.

So if he’s being affected by mental health, it doesn’t matter if it’s his music or his kid’s music, neither is getting completed because he’s not going to get anything done, because mental health problems will impede his productivity.

It struck me while writing this how much more powerful a statement you could make if you were to go to Israel and tell the press and the Israeli people how you feel about their current regime, then do a concert on the understanding that the purpose of your music was to speak to the Israeli people’s better angels. That would have a much greater effect than a boycott.
I dunno. I can see his point but I’m also disappointed? It’s definitely not “staunchly pro-Israel”. He’s just made a decision to play there and is using that to justify it. I don’t know if showing up and telling people in person is better than boycotting and showing them what they’re missing. If I were in his position I’d boycott.
I kind of get it though, in my experience prejudices die by exposure, they flourish in the dark. I don’t see how an artistic performance boycott does anything but further close them off to other points of view.
The thing is that the BDS movement specifically asked for a cultural and academic boycott of Israel as well. The same thing happened with Apartheid-era South Africa.
I could understand his point in isolation, but there’s a larger social context here. Israelis (and Palestinians) don’t, I think, need awareness raised, they already know what’s going on there.

My ex once took me to see some small band I can’t even remember the name of because it turned out Robert Plant was the opening act. He was secretly opening so he could test out some new material he was working on (Saving Grace) without precolouring people’s perceptions, but he was also Robert Plant so he blew the crowd away. I felt genuinely bad that a bunch of young twenty something’s had been put in the position of having to follow up on one of the greatest singers of all time. I remember them being fine, I might have enjoyed them in another context, but the contrast in skill and experience was just insurmountable.
I didn’t actually give rammstein a proper chance until recently. Was connected to a customers system and they were blasting rammstein, which came to my computer. Actually didn’t mind it. Added it to my library

So, to me, its weird that Macklemore was only an opening act. I suspect many people could name more Macklemore songs than Ed Sheeran ones, and I definitely hear macklemore on the radio more (on all stations) here in Australia

Sheeran sings the hook on a ton of rap/ hiphop songs and both are basically pop music artists.
There is definitely an over lap between people who listen to Ed Sheeran and bump thrift shop.

They used to also have double features at the drive in movie theaters too, and they’d have some odd mashups. I remember watching the movie Big, and the Rambo 3. Place stayed full.
The drive-in nearest me still does that. It’s sometimes hard to decide if the kids would make it through all three movies.
