Turns out the most profitable AI business model is stealing the hardware before anyone can spend billions teaching it to hallucinate. Wall Street calls that an asset light strategy. Nvidia calls it demand. The thieves call it same day delivery.

A new “back to the their roots” fast and furious movie. Instead of A/V gear it’s GPUs this time

Damn, beat me to it. The Fast & The Furious truck hijacking is one of my “what part of a movie hasn’t aged well” go-to responses. They were stealing shipments full of millions of dollars of ultra high-end, top-of-the-line, super high-tech… DVD players? The same DVD players that are like $5 for an entire pallet on eBay now?

Same will hold true for GPUs in 20 years time. People will laugh as they watch from their quantum computers.

How does the value of equipment nowadays make it not age well? They were still worth a lot during the time the film is set.

So they get paid selling the “stolen” hardware and insurance fraud on top of it. And still nobody does anything.

This is the kind of Robin Hood shit I can get behind.

Steal from people who not only increased prices for the common folks but can easily afford the loss. Give it back to folks who are just trying to live their lives.

    Fuck AI.

I mean, it says the thieves are sending the hardware to China. That can mean anything from gaming black market to state-sponsored funneling of hardware to Chinese AI companies. It might be less Robin Hood and more… I don’t know, some Jackie Chan movie where Triads are operating in the US and working with a Chinese diplomat to help some mega-corp.

I’m sorry, but this is not going to folks trying to live their lives. They couldn’t even use the specialized hardware.

I want that to be true, but from the article:

The first instinct is to assume that all of the gear would end up on the second-hand market. But in an additional twist to the story, the thieves already have overseas buyers ready before the heist actually takes place.

Law enforcement officials believe that the gear is slurped up by entities operating in countries under the U.S.’ tight AI export controls, including China. Verified Carrier, a platform for vetting carriers, says that this year, it’s seen suspicious activity linked with U.S. cargo theft in India, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Colombia, and Moldova. Scott Cornell of TAPA Americas estimates that six to seven out of 10 stolen cargo shipments (data center gear or otherwise) end up overseas.

See? The thieves are just thinking about money, not justice or social balance.

Give what back? Nothing was taken from people trying to live their lives. This stealing is of datacenter gear.

Thieves steal millions dollars worth of shipments by hacking a highway billboard and prompt injecting all the trucks
