Nah in that situation it would be bad enough for a “things could be better honestly”

It’s an English stereotype that they feel awkward when expressing emotions and would rather suffer silently than “impose” on someone by asking for help.

(edit: or at least that was my read. The other person who replied might be right that it could be a joke about recent events, because they arrest 30+ people per day for social media posts.)

I guess Pink Floyd was referring to this in the song Time:

“Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way.”

Ohhh I thought there was some stereotype about Brits getting water leaks all the time, that clears it up.

This has, iirc, led to some definite communication issues with allies. I think it was in the Korean war when a British unit was asked by an American unit what their status was. The reply was: just a bit sticky. Americans thought: all good no problem. British meant: we are surrounded, out of ammo and are about to be overrun.

Hehe, yeah, the Brits were surrounded by something like 20k Chinese soldiers, as I recall. A bit sticky indeed.

I don’t, but from this wiki article it sounds like at least some survivors were eventually rescued:

The surviving Glosters were rescued by a column of tanks; they escaped under fire, sitting on the decks of the tank.

Unless they’re in Australia and NZ, then they become “Whinging Poms” because they used to not be able to handle the weather and culture.

Comic Strips is a community for those who love comic stories.

The rules are simple:

  • The post can be a single image, an image gallery, or a link to a specific comic hosted on another site (the author’s website, for instance).
  • The comic must be a complete story.
  • If it is an external link, it must be to a specific story, not to the root of the site.
  • You may post comics from others or your own.
  • If you are posting a comic of your own, a maximum of one per week is allowed (I know, your comics are great, but this rule helps avoid spam).
  • The comic can be in any language, but if it’s not in English, OP must include an English translation in the post’s ‘body’ field (note: you don’t need to select a specific language when posting a comic).
  • Politeness.
  • AI-generated comics aren’t allowed.
  • Limit of two posts per person per day.
  • Bots aren’t allowed.
  • Banned users will have their posts removed.
  • Adult content is not allowed. This community aims to be fun for people of all ages.
