The threadiverse is small (compared to other major platforms) and I often see usernames that I recognize. How well do we notice each other around here?
I’ll start… my name’s “MrShankles” and I do be commenting/posting from time to time
For me, one of the great things about this general style of “News Aggregation” social media is that it’s community/topic focused rather than being focused on individual personalities/identities. So, in that respect, I really don’t notice or pay attention to the usernames, aside from blocking/filtering out all the crumby people that make this place a much worse experience for me. Out of sight, out of mind, so I couldn’t even tell you who those people are.

I find that so strange. I never have blocked anyone on any platform and I have been doing that chat with people for a really long time. Like back in the bbs days. I have never found it necessary, and often find that I disagree with someone on one thing, only to find we have common interests elsewhere.
I see people say they block people a lot, but why would you do it? Does it really matter? Do you not simply skip over what is not interesting to you?
I’m probably just really good at identifying bad online behavior with people who will never ever contribute anything of value to me or the platform. If all they’re ever going to do is bring negativity and bad vibes, it actually saves me time in the long run to filter them out so I can focus on the actual decent people.
Well, I recognize a few people. But I’m to busy to really post and comment to much to be known. But hey, while I’m here does anyone recognize me?
I recognize a few dozen usernames on sight, most of which have already been mentioned. Voyager tracks how many times you’ve up/downvoted each person, which makes it easy to recognize accounts after a while.
Though looking through the comments here there are only three posters who I’ve never upvoted, two of whom have the new user tag, and almost all have two or three digit upvote totals. The Fediverse is definitely small and held up by the frequent posters.
I don’t recognise many, but there are a few that pop up regularly like PugJesus, Picard Maneuver and K O L O N A K I.

I don’t personally use Lemmy for nsfw stuff, but I’m never mad about MentalEdge’s posts when I’m cruising all.

I don’t recognize anyone, I don’t focus on who says stuff but what is said. I ignore the user and the instance (like ignoring ads on websites) and read the content. Only when it’s uncanny pro Russia I check if it’s an ml user. I never block or tag, too much work.
Blocking is so easy, though, and so freeing. When I learned to embrace blocking this became a far more chill place.
It’s not implemented very well and it essentially punishes you for blocking people and distorts your view of things that don’t necessarily even have to do with that person. The feature barely checks the box and isn’t good enough if its actually important. But of course no one should be doing important things here.
Yeah, I understand that, but I kind of enjoy some lively discussions. Plus I want to avoid creating my own echo chamber.
If Lemmy were my entire window to the world, I’d be worried about an echo chamber. It’s not though, so I keep it as a safe place. I don’t owe anyone my attention just because they have feels about something I say or we comment on the same boards.

I’m new to this site but in similar sites I don’t normally read the usernames. It’s like my brain just automatically skips over it and as you said just focuses on what is said.
Names come and go. Givessomefucks is the only one that comes to mind. Mostly I just respond to the words. My client shows an upvote total. I guess I start to recognize names when someone states running that upvote total up.
Words are more important than identity. That’s why I’m on anonymous social media in the first place. I might be a cantankerous asshole in one thread because mood, and the next I’m offering advice with authenticity and lived experience. Those two posts might as well be written by different people.
I don’t buy into celebrity, no matter how small.

I mostly recognize names in the art communities, especially if it’s people posting their own art. You get to know a person’s style.
most usernames I’m seeing here I have blocked, due to the prolific nonsense they post.
Scrolled through found many recognisable names ladybutterfly, kolanaki, lots of others.

Its interesting a lot of the names I see are definitely found in the ‘all’ crowd of lemmy, but theres lots of users who are prolific, but spend their time in more secluded areas of the network that i’d recognise.
A few stand out besides the most prolific posters. There’s only a few other !sumo@lemmy.world fans on here so I remember sergio for sure. Otherwise I’ve seen a couple people making nitpicky grammar nazi type comments which kind of annoys me and is antithetical to how I see grammar as a descriptivist, so I tend to notice those. Seems to be less of it these days though; a couple years ago feels like I’d run into a handful of those comments every day.
I only recognize PugJesus by name and there are a few regular posters on the trans communities who I recognize in their pictures.
If they comment/post a lot and use an avatar or have emojis in their display name, I probably recognize them.
Very few I recognize by name alone.

There’s also a dude/lady around here that has a Taiwan flag in their name that always has really thought-provoking comments (even though they’re sometimes received as controversial takes that get downvoted from time to time). I always take the time to read their stuff.
I almost forgot! Godric with their little rainbow gif avatar. Seeing their posts always puts a smile on my face.
I’m the exact opposite. My client doesn’t have avatars and I gloss over emojis but I remember most folks who are furry or furry-adjacent, especially you because my client tags upvote counts and you’re at like +165.
