I made this a while back, and just realised I placed Poliwhirl way below Poliwag and Poliwrath! The three should be together in the “awesome” tier!
I might have also been slightly harsh on Charmeleon…

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Are artificially coloured flames used to indicate certain properties of an appliance?English
0·4 hours agoI have heard of lighters with cosmetic colours! I think Hacksmith had (or has? Unsure if it was a limited time event or not) little bits to change the colour of their mini lightsaber lighter.
I was thinking more functional usecases for it though, yeah. Like you know that A equipment is certified to do B thing (heating or something, idk) because it has this colour of fire, or it’s used to show that this fire is a specified temperature (for specific applications that need it, then you can just say the distinct colour of fire vs “reddish”, “whitish”, and “blueish” flames)
Good picks! After Sandshrew, Psyduck is definitely one of my favourites Kanto mons. Gengar is also high up there!
Also, comment on my tier lists of Pokemon from generations up to Galar (excluding Gen 7 / Alola, but know that Meltan is one of my favourites from there)

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why are people speculating that the most recent Trump assassination attempt was fake?English
0·1 day agoSomeone I know (who believes the previous one could have been staged) has suggested the opposite. They argue that, in the previous attempt, Trump raises his fist and isn’t very scared, while in the most recent attempt, he looks quite scared and even trips.
I think there’s not enough evidence to say that the previous attempt was staged (but there’s a small chance it could have been), and it is very unlikely that this one is staged.
It’s a math pun that I came up with.
explanation of pun
In maths, “translation” is when you move an object in space. It is one of the transformations (like rotation and scaling).
The other, more widely known use of “translation” is to convert between languages (in this case, from French to English).
The math teacher interprets “translation” with the maths definition, and moves five steps. Abstract units (like “steps”) is common when you are learning the transformations in school (e.g. Alice moves 10 steps to the right, the point X moves 5 units in the southwest direction)
Wait, Asperger’s is considered a bad term? I did not know that as someone originally diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome myself (but I did understand that it became incorporated as part of the spectrum).
Doing a bit more research, looks like it’s because of its origins in WWII Nazi Germany (and therefore being linked to eugenics, white supremacy, etc., the idea that these people are better than those people). Dang, I definitely did not know that. I will try not to use it then.
a plain bird plane! Look at it go! Translation, rotation, it can do it all! Wait, is it getting bigger? Run!

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•question about the night time sky in January vs nighttime sky in JulyEnglish
0·3 days agoThe night time sky is not the same as the constellations above you will look different. It’s difficult to tell, especially if you live somewhere with a lot of light pollution, but the night sky does change. If you are near some place rural where the sky is clear, check it out! It’s pretty neat. Hell, the ancient peoples (Greeks, Chinese, Romans, etc.) wrote mythos relating to how the constellations, perceived as gods, appear and disappear depending on the season.
Fun fact, there are some constellations that are never visible to those in the northern and southern hemispheres, especially when you go near the poles.
Summit can be installed through the Google Play Store as well. Forgot to add that, sorry!

0·5 days agogassed the theater. With hundreds of innocent members of the public inside
That’s terrible! And just double-checking with a bit of searching, yeah, this was a real incident. Whether it was “staged” is unclear (not enough evidence to support or deny it due to the lack of an investigation). But the Russian authorities did indeed release a noxious gas into the theatre without any sort of evacuation or coordination with health services, yet the official report by the Kremlin hails it as a success even though over a hundred people died?! I feel like, staged or not, that is something that should be criticised.
For a bit of context, Russia was invading Chechnya, which declared independence after the dissolution of the USSR, and a Chechen militant group took over a theatre and held everyone in it hostage (how they did that, I’m not sure. Some of the sources blame it on negligence of Russian intelligence, or suggest that authorities in the area were bribed). There was a siege of the theatre, and by the second day, people started to get shot. Afterwords, the Russian special forces gassed the theatre before entering it in an assault, and most of the hostages, as well as the Chechen militants, were killed. Additionally, authorities in Russia did not say what the gas was, meaning the people administering first aid had to guess, causing more death and permanent injuries than was necessary.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is Framework an ethical company?English
0·5 days agoThat is true, I did not check that! At least Rails World isn’t a solo project by DHH like Omarchy is, so much of the proceeds are not going towards DHH (but of course, some of it is unfortunately). It looks like Framework is sponsoring the event in part to secure a booth to showcase their devices and such.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How does open source BIOS protect against unintentional USB devices?English
0·6 days agoWhen the drive in encrypted, you need a (very very long) encryption key to read it. Otherwise, the data is obfuscated and can’t be read by bad actors. This encryption key is essentially impossible for (non-quantum) computers to crack as it would take too long
Personally, I am using Summit (installed with Obtainium, it is not available in F-Droid)
I find that it works quite well and has a very nice user interface! Pretty customisable too.

0·6 days agoHow you would be able to get there, I’m not sure. Travelling there, even at near light speeds, would take many (and I mean many) human lifetimes. Then you have the problem of fitting it in your mouth, since last I heard, it’s gotten very big.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What was going on in Africa during WW2?English
0·6 days agoThe Allies were securing the North African territories (from Italy and Vichy France) and defending their own territories from being taken by the Axis powers (like British-controlled Egypt). Once the Allies had kicked the Axis out of North Africa, they could more easily land in southern Italy!
As somebody else have said, there was also conflict between Ethiopia and Italy.

In the U.S. at least, Motorola is a more recognisable/established than OnePlus is. In other parts of the world, OnePlus has more dominance (like the Chinese and Indian markets)
One thing to add, the precursor to the 15, the OP 13 (14 skipped due to the number 4 being bad luck in China), was actually the first one to ship with SiC batteries in the U.S.!
