Those hoses can’t be bent because of the water flow.

this happens all the time. I saw it in the 90s doing ride-alongs with med-star (ambulance company). it’s gonna dump a lot of water into the vehicle, too, because hoses get use, worn and leak. And every time I see it I feel a little bit of joy in my heart because fuck you, stop blocking hydrants you ghouls.

Rules are rules? I totally agree. But deciding about punishment is, according to the rules, not the job of the fire fighters.

So it seems you are all all-in on “rules are rules” sometimes, but fine with “who cares about rules” at others?

I thought we already agreed that this is neither required nor useful, and just punishment. Or you replied to the wrong comment?

you don’t need to be tough, just smart enough to not block access to fireplugs or man enough to admit it was a dumb decision and take your licks.

    Are those laminated side windows?

    Oof.

I guess in a situation where you need to break your side window to get out, you’re just fucked then, huh?

No warning lights on the car parked in an illegal spot? What an amateur

I hope the firefighter enjoyed doing that as much I enjoyed watching it

is the car even illegally parked? no painted curb or signs in sight, and the car doesn’t seem to be overlapping with the hydrant at all.

Anything within a certain distance of a fire hydrant is a no parking zone. I’m not sure if this differs at all in distance by jurisdiction (since every state has separate licensing). There are sometimes also signs on poles that explicitly say this.

That’ll depend on where you live. Without painted curbs I’d rely on the physical indicators. In this case the bollards in front of it. Car is outside the shown limits so I’m guessing this is legally parked and they just wanted a video.

Absolutely 100% not legally parked. Whether curbs are marked or not, you can’t park that close to a hydrant. 15ft is usually the standard minimum across the US.

            usually

Well there’s your problem, your country doesn’t standardise shit well enough.

And there should still be indicators even if the rule is 15 feet. Someone from another state or country might not know, but a yellow line is a very clear indication.

He wasted about two minutes in an emergency to do this. The guy illegally parked there, let the law enforcement handle it and do your job. He could have hooked it up and went literally any direction he wanted to without potentially damaging the hose on broken glass and wasting time doing so.

Of course they can be bent. Also how fucking slow are they working. We measure this in seconds, not minutes. The tank in the engine is limited and ideally you try to run multiple hoses at once. And sneakers and shorts? Firefighters in the US are weird.

They have the NYC FD emblem on the car, which is s full-service FD

They should get their overwidth truck privileges revoked, it kills good urbanism when they can’t reach a one-way or bike-only street. Bike paths are actually a common way for emergency services in non-American cities to bypass traffic jams, a well-known problem in NYC

He wasn’t the only one doing things and in no way slowed down the whole procedure. There are many steps involved in getting water going and connecting the hose is merely one step. They also don’t need the hose from a hydrant hooked up to spray what’s already in the tank unless they showed up empty.

The amount of water in a tank is a fraction of what is needed to tackle a major fire. You’ve got about 3 minutes worth with a branch open at full flow.

Because of that limitation, you also aren’t going to start an internal attack until you have a reticulated supply established, since running out of water while inside a building is a potential death sentence.

If I were in the same position I would have simply run my feeder run around or over the car rather than messing about like this guy.

Yeah, some fire departments are known for doing this. It’s not about a shorter route for the hose, it’s about sending a message.

Probably because this made the hose kink and they had to disconnect it all and run it over the car instead while the people inside the building suffocated to death.

I’ve seen a car being towed/dragged out of an alley it was double parked in, so the fire brigade could gain access. They did NOT care how damaged it was in the process.

That seems like a legitimate reason to do so. There seemed to be absolutely no reason to do this in this specific situation though as it didn’t accomplish anything and actually made the angle of the hose much worse than it would have been using literally any other solution.

Seems like time was lost with teaching a lesson…just toss the hose over the car, no? Yes they deserve a fine or something as well but seems excessive in this situation.
