I’ve never been addicted to smoking, but I’ve quit Reddit three times for upwards of a year, and I’m still on Reddit.

Other social media (Instagram, TikTok, even YouTube) were much easier to quit though

Corporate control and toxic trolling are completely unrelated problems.

In fact, corporate control used to be one of the primary ways to REDUCE toxic trolling before all the tech platforms went mask off when they realized the political levers are now in the hands of those very trolls.

It’s a problem inherent in humanity. The only way to get rid of trolling, self-promotion, and toxicity is to get off the internet altogether.

I didn’t do anything special to my feed, but out of the bat it’s so much more depressing, rage inducing, and sensational. And the comments are way more…polarizing so to speak. There is more genuine people here than on Reddit, but every time I scroll here I stop because my heartbeat goes up. If Reddit is 50% bots doing ads and 40% ragebait, here all the ads are replaced by pure concentrated ragebait.

lemmy is literally the same, in fact id say of all the social medias i’ve been on this place is the worst and most toxic and most political

you cannot escape american politics it’s everywhere, community doesn’t matter, this place is like 90% politics 10% linux which is also somehow political

anyone whose opinion isn’t strictly left wing is constantly dogpiled and banned, this place is not the alternative to social media

I disagree with the person you respond to on many things, but if you’re around here for a while, it is obvious. Lemmy is dying, and more importantly, it is extremifying and openly advocating for violence, which is pretty bad.

A large portion of Lemmy is very comfortable cencoring any pro-democracy notion. There is a radical group calling themselves left, communist, socialist and anti imperialist, but they actually want trump to keep running things, because that might bring down the US the fastest.

They don’t like the Palestinian genocide, but don’t mind the other one, and are also totally okay with 330m americans suffering just for their political gain. That ideology is carried by the creators of Lemmy, and spreading outside the OG instance.

Lemmy will not survive unless serious and decisive action is taken by intance admins to curb the radicalisation.

the nrl community is dead, the ai community is dead, mistral comm is dead, brisbane comm is dead, fitness dead, is there a gym comm? hardstyle dead, lemmy shitpost: https://lemmy.world/post/53465720 full of american politics, technology full of anti-ai and anti-big tech articles (honestly tiring after 4 million articles on the same thing), no economic comm that isn’t american and iirc that one is also pretty much dead, there’s practically 0 australian content here, what do you propose I post about? maybe i should make some more posts in dead comms for people to go though my history and downvote them?

tbh im mainly bitching because i’m disappointed, i can’t force the people who post here to care about other things so all i can do is whine

also insert “we should improve society somewhat” meme here

Can’t say I’ve seen any ads on here? Unless you count the Rule 63 Malfoy stuff that has been popping up all over the internet. At least in recent memory. Or the game deals community haha.

I was very frustrated at everyone getting mad at twitter, and then going to bluesky instead of mastodon.

At a certain point, once everyone is there everyone else has to go there.

I will say fedi right now has a pretty good vibe. Some of the more negative/angry people have left and its been a chill little community lately.

The truth is, it’s the most balanced people who left. Most people who remain are deep in the echo chamber, which is why it seems more chill: everyone agrees with you and the ones with realistic opinions have left.

Balanced compared to most lemmy users, yes, though perhaps less than the average person. If you feel balanced on lemmy, then you are very much an extremist.

My comments seem negative because I only comment on controversial topics, and since I don’t parrot the common opinion around here, it gives them a negative tone. I never bother with the “I agree” comments like everyone loves so much, even when I do agree, because they do not incite discussion.

Maybe different for different people, but I don’t mind disagreement if it’s civilized. But some people come in with a ton of snark, condescension and rage, and then when it’s revealed that they don’t actually know what they’re talking about they double down, of course. I’ve started just blocking when I see the initial symptoms now.

Yeah this is pretty much the only reason I still use any social media like YouTube, Facebook, and Reddit.

YouTube cause I like the long form video essays (yes I know Nebula exists, but I am cheap).

Reddit for the niche communities that aren’t really popular here (Lemmy is my shitpost haven though).

Facebook only exists for me because of Facebook Marketplace and literally no other reason.

To be fair, I see a bit of ragebait occasionally on the fediverse too.

I’ve also seen a lot of smaller communities bend their own rules presumably for the sake of engagement as well. No ads is nice though and having real people around is also wonderful.

The comic leaves out the whole “joining the right server and communities for you” part. If nobody tells you before joining, then you see a bunch of horrible stuff. If someone does tell you before joining, then it’s a daunting prospect.

Yes. Filter lists to subscribe to would be a big help to new users.

Especially if we could generate a default one that just includes some kind of median block/filter set generated from previous choices across users on the current instance.

Then a new user could just make one early choice: “Automatically filter unpopular content” or “see everything”.

Fediverse isn’t all that great though despite all the cope, scroll through all and you see that it’s 50% news slop about how US conservatives bad that’s designed to keep you scrolling, 35% porn, 5% leftoid memes and 10% for everything else, pretty much like reddit minus the copious amount of rightoids. The culture is also pretty much the same.

Engagement and upvote hunting also does play a role, else there wouldn’t be people who make posting their day job or (as of late) bots automatically scraping popular posts from reddit to post here.

Like sure it’s decentralized, but what good does it do when it’s almost the same in content as the bad platform it denounces?

On the fediverse you can hold real conversations with people in comments. That rarely happens on Reddit.

However as the fediverse grows, even as we are seeing in this thread, it becomes increasingly impossible.

edit Wow there really are a lot of comments here. Are people botting these or are we reaching this real level of interaction? Forget about upvotes or views this is crazy.

I think it helps you can see people you agree or disagree with in a bunch of comments, you can almost get a feel for who is courteous and who is just angry.

Reddit has always been more of a anonymous feeling website for me.

have you tried different instances? piefed.social blocks nsfw/nsfl as well as ragebait political figures’ names by default.

at any rate most of the complaints people have with reddit aren’t about its content, they’re about its slimy ass leadership, powertripping mods, and AI infestation. fediverse isn’t immune to any of that but it hasn’t metastasized here at least.
