Is Xbox360 the same generation as PS3?
Xbox has some silly names. You have the Xbox (PS2 era), the Xbox 360, the Xbox One (which was a big flop), the Xbox One X / S (revised versions that were mostly forgotten about), then the Xbox Series X / S (modern era)
My theory is that the Xbox naming strategy is designed to maximize the confusion of older relatives buying consoles as gifts. You’d be able to pawn more old models off on grandmas who thought it was the right one, and a fraction of the recipients of those old consoles would likely keep it and buy a newer one eventually.
Either that or someone at Sony was blackmailing Microsoft’s chief naming officer. I can’t think of another coherent reason for that mess.
It was just a moronic perception that in the choice between Xbox2 and PS3, buyers would pick the bigger number.
But then they shot themselves in the foot because where do you go from 360?
And the easy answer is to release a peripheral that upgrades the original a bit, call it the Xbox 2, then release the 3 alongside the ps3
Yeah or if their research really showed that 3>2 was going to be decisive to their bottom line, just fucking skip two places ahead and call it the Xbox4. Who’s going to stop you?

A few years ago someone said something about one of the newer Xboxs. Either Xbox One X or Xbox series X. I forget which. And I asked “Is that the newest Xbox?”
And this guy goes off on me. Claims I’m gaslighting him, and that everyone knows which generation each Xbox is/was.
And I honestly didn’t. I was genuinely asking.
So now I feel vindicated in my prior ignorance, because with Playstation, it’s real simple. 4 is 2 more than 2. So even if you didn’t know playstation, you know numbers. So even my nongaming mom could tell you PS4 came after PS3.
But with Xbox, it was just random jibberish. Even Nintendo console names aren’t easily placed in order by non-gamers, but at least they have personality.
Like I don’t think my mom would know that the N64 came before the Wii. She would have no way to know the order. But she knows what the Wii is. She gave my niece a wii.
But Xbox names just sound like the codes stores internally use to refer to products. Sometimes you see it on the barcode.
So like Hunts BBQ sauce 16oz bottle, might be “HntzBBQ16”. Thats what Xbox names feel like.

I bought an Xbox one X recently to play the newer Forza Horizon series and when i was looking for one, the amount of posts i saw that listed an Xbox one X as a Xbox series X, or someone listing an Xbox series X as an Xbox one was astounding. It was at least 40% of the listings on local sites. Most people didn’t care to look at the label on the back to see what they were selling, they just knew it was an xbox. Microsoft really screwed everyone up with their stupid names.

This is my own personal rule, so therefore I obviously think it’s the most correct definition:
Once a “next-gen” (eg. PS5) console becomes “current gen”, then the previous “current-gen” (eg. PS4) console becomes “last-gen”, and the previous “last-gen” (eg. PS3) console becomes “retro”.
Maybe that whole train stopped when consoles became PCs?
You’re probably not wrong; consoles moving to x86-64 likely was a death knell.
It’s too long to post here as a comment, but I believe that the PS3 stumbling early (price, giant enemy crab etc.) resulted in Sony JP losing control of the Computer Entertainment division to Sony US, and it was that shift that signed console farming’s fate all the way back to before the release of the PS4.
The fact that the whole X/O remapping was forced onto Japan is just one example of this relative loss of power.
I fell the differences between the most recent two generations aren’t enough to warrant a shift in stages.
We’re well past the point where even if a console generation doubles the number of polygons it can process over its predecessor - it will be difficult for us end-users to be able to discern much of a difference.
We will likely get to a point where 4K120Hz may be possible for some titles with AI support in the next generation; but given Sony’s decision to not make discs of future games - they can go fuck themselves.
And with bump/normal mapping, they were able to bake the appearance of 6 million triangles into the texture and wrap it around the 600 triangle model.
Slightly off-topic, but has anyone ever checked if the tri-counts given here are actually correct? The first one, sure, you can count that by hand and it seems to be more or less correct (since we can’t see the backside). The thrid and fourth are too hard too count, so we just have to believe that. The second one though? I don’t see how that can be more than 300 tris or so.

Such a great library, although inFamous was a PS3 exclusive. In fact, it’s one of the few titles that was never re-released on another platform, so until recently it was only playable on original hardware

The Xbox 360 release of PvZ is the most feature complete version. It has the zen garden, the mini games, and a co-op mode where you and a friend each control a cursor to go around planting and digging while sharing resources. You can also butter the zombies to buy a little more time. It’s a great deal of fun and I don’t know that any other version has the co-op. I may have my physical copy floating around somewhere but I bought it digitally for my Xbox One since it’s backwards compatible.

i play my ps2, ps1, n64, snes, gba, gb, gc, genesis and arcade games on my pc. soon as i can take time to learn the xbox side of things, those will join the party
On xemu I’ve played amped 2 and the 007 games they run pretty well don’t know about the whole library compatibility.

Today I was looking at eink readers, when I remembered I had various old PDAs, like a psion 5, palm m100 and palm 1000 sitting in the cupboard. Same same, right? Throw some epubs on there, all good? Bit of spit an polish, install some legacy apps, few rounds of Dope Wars…boom.

I started a new playthrough of Final Fantasy Legend 2 this weekend, a childhood favorite and an original Game Boy game from 1991. I can feel my bones dissolving reading this post.
21 years old what the fuck. So at the end of it’s life it’s like 2012. I’m going to be honest emulation is going to dictate the legacy of the 360. At that point I’d already moved to pc but it would be good to know the must play exclusives.
More than anything consoles deliver a couch co op experience that pc just can’t match. Like I recently played obscure for xbox with a friend and it was a blast. 2 player resident evil in a high school.
