Saw this on Mastodon and had a laugh. Not sure if it’s real, but it’s funny.

I guess I am lame. I was there in July, when every true Fin is not to be found in Helsinki because there in their summer homes next to a lake.

This is the exact kind of stupid, childish advertising that has me shopping for plane tickets to Helsinki.

This is real. I saw it up when I started my first year at Helsingin yliopisto, which was the second half of 2018. I think it stayed up for quite a while, it may have even been up until Vappu (May 1). I believe it was for Europe’s largest hackathon -Junction 2018.

I have been to Helsinki in November, I loved it. Nice and cold and dry and also got some snow. Awesome people, great food, I would totally go back.

I wish to go to Finland one day, I wish to test mine cold resistance against theirs. My best is -10 in a suede jacket, t-shirt, and standard cargo pants because I put my jeep into a ditch because fucking black ice.

About 4 hours maybe more, IDK that’s just around the amount I was bored for and there was a solid chunk of time where I just stood around like a jackass.

The duration really makes the difference here. I went to school in a tshirt at - 5°C several times because I wasnt outside for mor than five minutes in one go. But I really felt it when my train got cancelled one time and I had to wait 45 minutes in the shade for the next one.

Wind and humidity also play a big role. I am fairly cold resistant but as soon as you add wind to the equation thin single linen or cotton layers become inadequate for the occasion.

Wander up to Luleå in Sweden if you can some day! Don’t go through Heathrow, legitimately the worst building I’ve ever been in, Take Icelandair through… Iceland. There is an ice road here you can walk, skate, and even drive on. Gets to -30c, though I’ve heard some years get as low as -40. They put a sauna out on the ice and cut a hole next to it so you can go right from the sauna to the water

See that makes the Suede jacket acceptable - since the thread is about Finland, I’d personally assumed -10C when reading your comment and in that case, nothing more than a t-shirt would’ve been necessary.

The perk would be that a large portion understands Swedish, which would also be the reason why everyone would naturally hate me. :)

          a large portion understands Swedish

Absolutely not the case, except for some Swedish speaking regions that are only a tiny part of the country and consist of villages and small towns.

Like 90% of Finns can’t even have simple conversations in Swedish.

which would also be the reason why everyone would naturally hate me.

          Why would “everyone” hate you?

It was a joke that you seemed to take very seriously. The pun of the joke was that since Sweden and Finland have been rivals for centuries, ranging from wars, to sports, it would be rather awkward for a Swedish person to live in Finland. I know that this is not true, I’m fully aware that both countries have thousands of people living in the other country and that generally speaking, this is not an issue. This was again, a silly joke that did not reflect any truth. I hope you have a terrific Friday!

I think this is real. Was originally made several years ago.

Helsinki isn’t so bad in November, actually. I’m in Oulu, wayyy further up north. Starting to get into the oof territory. I would probably feel stronger about this if I was not mildly drunk.

Isn’t being mildly drunk sort of a prerequisite for winter where you are? It gets mighty cold where I am and I feel like that’s true.

As far as my arms go, yes.

The definition of kalsarikännit means being drunk on the couch with your underpants on. I have my underpants. And jeans. And t-shirt. 'Cause winter is coming. And…

        Fff sshh

[goes to the kitchen to look at the thermometer]

OK not bad yet, but it reminds me I need to finally get Frostpunk off my Steam backlog this winter, been too long. …What were we talking about? [falls face first on the phone with nose on the submit button]

Frostpunk in the winter is great. I first played it in North Dakota during the 2019 polar vortex when the windchill got down to -50 degrees freedom units (-45 Celsius) with my new game-syncing lights. As the in-game temp got colder and ice crackled across the screen, the lights would brighten white to match and I became more and more aware of the cold creeping into my room through the house’s insulation. It was super immersive. I hope you get the chance to play it this winter!

I was there for that winter! Idk if it was 18 or 19 [edit after posting i checked. It was likely february 9th 2019] One of the -48f nights (ambient mind you, just west of Tioga, was told later wind chills were like -75-90) I went back out to site on my days off to help a friend fix an air line on one of our pumps. Spent about 4 hours out in it straight, was on site for a while longer in and out making sure his spare stayed operational. I will never be able to truly describe how that felt. It was cold enough to trigger fight or flight, and then you have to decide to stay in it, and then have to make mechanical, proper decisions. I lost like half of a tool kit in the snow because I could not feel anything, I had to watch my hands. Eyes squinted, keeping them open froze the tears and it was a constant minor burning sensation. I had to touch metal bare skinned to get a couple of fittings off, and started threaded when putting it back together. Lost skin but not that much, but still some.

The week or so before that night we’d had a couple feet of snow and williston main street via 1804 by Scenic Sports had about a foot of snow on it when I set out. Such a special memory for me it was one of the few times it was literally me vs the world.

The light pillars at night and sun dogs in the day when it is fucking cold are pretty spectacular

I think it depends on your experience with city builders and resource management games. Having played games like Tropico 4 and some Sim City 3000 I managed to get through the main story on my first try in one 5~8 hour sitting. My friend who is less experienced lost entirely after ~2 hours and stopped there. It’s pretty tough until you know the mechanics, but that’s also part of what makes it so rewarding to survive.

The DLCs are also worth giving a shot. One of them is a prequel that gives the game mechanics a little twist and the other is a collection of missions based on the main game with secondary objectives other than fighting off the cold. Awesome game and should be pretty cheap on a sale
