The most important and missed part of this video is that dad hugging his son.
Forget everything else you know about America or this accident. That hug shows who we are in America. Look closely. That’s us. Love each other!
Americans thinking they have monopoly on love
Look even closer. We have a monopoly on melting pot culture.
Right
I’m betting his phone was found jammed against his face.
That’s the most Dodge Truck thing I’ve ever seen.
I love how the white dude found out his kid was black, meaning his wife cheated, but he hugged and raised his son anyway.
Permaban.
Not on lemme, there’s no mods to save you
Thats what I said, permaban
You got banned for pedophilia tho
Aight, I’m just going to block this community. Mods are complicit.
This guy lives in a world without black women and adoption.
Or new relationships
I don’t see a video on this link at all
Its in the post description
can’t upvote a link to an adblock-disabling site, sry
I’d like to know what was on the driver’s phone that was so much more interesting than a stationary bus a hundred yards in front of them.
I hate to share this story. Have a friend. She did the same thing. She wasn’t on the phone, she wasn’t distracted, and she wasn’t intoxicated. HER KIDS WERE ON THE BUS. She just dropped them off. Country roads heading home same as every day before. Routine. She saw the bus and she just wasn’t there mentally when the bus stopped for something on the road. Worst still I used to get all worked up over shit like how did you not notice and what not. We’ll it happens. I read a study done on people who forgot their kids in cars. Well our brains are fucking assholes. The just of it if you ever forgot your phone, wallet, keys, lunch, what’s ever. This could happen to you.
This might be “normal” in a system where people are forced to work above their limits causing cognitive impairment, and still forcing them to drive a deadly vehicle. It shouldn’t be normal though.
He was calling about his missed payment because he bought 5 times more truck than he can afford. “But I need a $70,000 truck.”
His ego.
The initial investigation indicates that the pickup driver was following the bus too closely
Did they not see the video? Bus was almost at a full stop and it still took the truck 5 seconds to hit it at Mach Fuck. Not even a nervous driving instructor would call a >5 second follow distance “too close.”
That’s the traffic offense. It’s the ticket you get when you rear-end someone. They aren’t trying to throw the book at the driver. It’s a routine citation.
Whoever wrote it just called a traffic ticket an “investigation” to make it sound dramatic.
I suppose it wastechnically the truth… Embedded in the back of the bus is certainly following too closely…
“On the same highway system in the same reality” is apparently too close for this negligent shithead.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the driver is a cop or at least knows the investigators. Sounds like a very fishy conclusion, the video makes it obvious he definitely had time enough to react.

Yep, that’s exactly what I thought. Even if you say that you were “brake-checked” for example, the cops in NYS will still give you a ticket and tell you to take it with the courts.
§ 1129. Following too closely. (a) The driver of a motor vehicle shall not follow another vehicle more closely than is reasonable and prudent, having due regard for the speed of such vehicles and the traffic upon and the condition of the highway.
Not to mention that NYS has stricter laws than most other states regarding stopped school busses; if they’re stopped, you can’t drive past them even if you’re in opposing traffic.
This story stinks, but glad that no kids got seriously hurt.
I know there is lots and lots of righteous anger here. And that everyone can’t wait to hate on the vehicles in the US. But even a quick and dirty cursory search reveals that school bus transportation is extremely safe and accidents are very rare. So let’s add some context.
School buses travel about 16.5 million miles EVERY morning in the US. Double that for total route distance every day.
There is one crash roughly per 311,828 miles. That’s 501,822km for those of you living in West Texas.
Buses travel 7.3 million miles/11,748,211km for every reported injury.
The rate of fatalities is .4 per 100 million miles. And for those anywhere in Alabama, .4 fatalities per 160,934,400km. And that is the total of deaths inside and outside the bus.
Hopefully I can trust Lemmy users understand that zero injuries and fatalities are statistically impossible to achieve. Nor is it possible to reduce stupid to zero. This driver is a prime example of that. Regardless of the vehicle being driven. At best, we can just change the type of stupid. But stupid still going to happen. And apparently even Dodge Ram drivers are statistically very safe around school buses…
The bus wasn’t the problem here.
Cool now do F-150s
zero injuries and fatalities are statistically impossible to achieve
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vision_Zero should still be our goal, and the U.S. lags behind most other countries in achieving it.
2007 Dodge Ram

#2 in accidents. No surprise here.
Well at least it is living up to its name…
I get a 403…
Perhaps the Sun was blinding his view.
Look at the shadow direction in the video.
That doesn’t explain why it happened.
What are the downvotes for? You actually know why this happened?
If they couldn’t see well enough to see something as large as a bus, the correct response is to slow down, not plow through at the speed limit.
That doesn’t explain why the driver didn’t slow down.
The point is the fault is 100% on the truck driver regardless of how well they could see. If they could see, but didn’t brake, it’s their fault. If they couldn’t see, and didn’t brake, it’s their fault.
Look at the angle of the shadows in the video – the sun is behind the driver
That isn’t an explanation of why it happened.
That’s not a full sized truck. That’s some wankers oversized support vehicle
Needs a truck that big to fit his magnum dong
You’d think a bus would be tall enough to get inside the vision cone of a lifted truck…
It would be, but his cell phone blocked it.
Holy crap, that truck driver only looked up in the last quarter-second. They most certainly were not “following too closely”, that’s bullshit.
The driver of the 2007 Dodge Ram pickup was taken to Wynn Hospital in Utica for treatment of minor injuries…
In the past, that accident would have been fatal to the driver. The only thing that saved him was government regulation requiring safety features, paid for by taxes–just to put a nice, fine point on it. Not everything our governments do is horrible, but I suspect the motivation in this case was insurance company lobbying, not empathy. It’s never empathy.
The height of pickup trucks should be capped by law. No crash compatibility with normal vehicles, automatically hits pedestrians in their vital organs, can’t see anyone sitting or fallen in front of it. What an absolutely idiotic society to let this kind of thing be driven on public roads without a special licence.
