I sold all my childhood consoles and games before I moved out on my own.
I think it would be kind of neat to play those games on original hardware, assuming the hardware itself still works. Obviously the “saves” on some of those 30+ year old cartridges might no longer work. On the other hand, it would just be more unused stuff sitting around taking up space and making moves more complicated for the past 3 decades, so I’m also perfectly at peace with the fact that I don’t have them anymore.
A couple of years ago, I fired up the Wii I bought from a buddy of mine back in '07 or '08, which was one of the early NA models from 2006. It still worked and the games I checked out still worked, including the digital ones. The online stuff is non-functional now though, but I never really used any of that other than sometimes I’d fire up the browser for the novelty of it.
Anyway pointless stories aside, I assume that reply was just contrarian / rage-bait commentary for engagement. I don’t know that particular person, but I know that type. They look at every interaction as a chance to “dunk” on someone / demonstrate their superiority in some way and/or as a means to gain attention, any attention, good or bad.
So, I wouldn’t read too much into it, unless you happen to know these folks personally.

See, I could maybe buy this argument if it was something unintentional. Maybe a server went down and lost all the data, or some hack required them to upgrade their security in a way that a 10-year-old console couldn’t handle. Sure, that kind of thing happens (though not usually for a megacorp like Sony, but anyway). But they made this decision intentionally. They put in extra work to make sure that it would function in this anticonsumer way. It cost them money and time to make this change.
Do I expect a console that I purchased 10 years ago to still operate in the same way now, barring disasters or malfunctions? Yes. Yes I do.

Haha, I was selling a whole racing chair/wheel/shifter combo for my partner’s dad and he got it for the PS3, so it came with around 10 games. I used dirt to test it, ended up deciding to keep it for myself in the end.
BUT my account and downloaded games also worked, because I didn’t hook it up to the Internet (which after reading this I shall never do).

I’ve replaced the save battery on NES carts before and save keeps working. Gaming used to be cool. Now it’s just a momentary money grab the company hopes you forget about.
If the saves are still there you can probably transfer them to an Emulator. Ps3 emulation is getting there.

If you buy a game as a kid, play the fuck out of it, then end up tossing that console in a box or closet for a decade as you grow up, then when that nostalgic urge to play your old game again hits you should be able to plug the console in and play again. Not told that your Xstation account was deleted because you didn’t log in as ButtholeSurfer696969lol in the last few years so all of those purchases no longer exist.
I haven’t even thought about it. I know where to find the games on the high seas and emulators are my preferred mode of play, although there are probably ways to run them on original hardware.

The case in the tweet wasn’t a hardware problem. Apparently the person’s PSN account had gotten deleted during their 10+ years of not using it, and downloaded games attached to the account didn’t work any more.

My PS Vita spent years in a closet, I charged it and it was as good as new (maybe the battery needs to be swapped), so yes.

That’s why I’ve never bought a digital game on console. For years, my strategy was to buy AAA games physically on console and indie games on PC via DRM-free services. Now that Sony is stopping physical disc production I won’t have that option anymore, but luckily none of the AAA studios make anything worth a damn these days.
Worth noting that it’s extremely easy to hack a PS3 and bypass the DRM.
